I'm from a country in South East Asia. I have a year or two before apply to US MBA (Top30) and I have two choices that are working in Product management for Big brandname company (Japanese company that Adcom would know) covering only my country or work in Product management for not so well known company (European company that Adcom probably not heard about) covering all South East Asia region.
What is the best choice Region coverage or Name of the company?
Many big brand companies have a rigorous selection process that already filters the top cream applicants and hence acts as a vet for b-schools to select candidates from there.
In your case, the regional company has big growth plans- if you can be a part of this growth story and contribute in a big way, it should be a good opportunity for you. It also seems this job will give you some international exposure, which is always valued by business schools.
Eventually, your application will stand on its own merits and beyond a point, the company credentials will have minimal significance. We have come across applicants who worked in big-name consulting companies, who never tried to do anything beyond their stated responsibilities. As a result they barely had any good stories to build their application upon and looked unprepared for an MBA.
So you'd be good at both the companies, so long as you do quality work, make some lasting impact, and get yourself some promotions.
