Hello,
I'm currently facing a bit of a dilemma. I recently achieved a 770 on the GMAT, but this score was driven primarily by my verbal performance (Q49, V46, IR7). I'm very happy with the score, but I'm not sure if the Q49 will hurt me in the application process.
A bit of relevant supporting info:
- This was the third time I wrote the exam; the first two times I scored in the low 700s (I was very nervous)
- In the practice exams I completed, I typically achieved scores around the 770 range (+/- 100); usually Q50 plus a verbal score of 42-46
- Target is H/S/W, will be applying in ~2-3 years in a competitive applicant group
Realistically, I think I could eventually achieve a Q50, but:
- It may be hard to achieve a V46 again; on a different set of question, it is very possible that I would score a bit lower (e.g. V44)
- Even if I can achieve a Q50 V46, it seems as though my score would still be 770. I would need to get a Q51 or V47+ to improve the overall score, which is probably a stretch for me
My questions are:
- Will Q49 be an issue for these top schools, especially if we are looking a few years down the road?
- Would you take a lower overall score (e.g. 760 - Q50, V43) over a higher, but unbalanced score?

First congratulations on a truly elite level overall GMAT score. 770 is a rare and exceptional score.
As far whether you should retake, the answer should focus on two things:
1) Your other quant credentials (work, undergraduate studies)
2) The programs you are applying to -- are they intensive quantitative programs in Finance, Operations Management or Analytics?
If not I'd suggest sticking with your 770 score -- you will be at the top of your incoming class and that's will truly power your application.
If you need a 50+ score, then I can offer our quant diagnostic session (FREE) for identify process changes which can quickly boost your quant square within a week or two.

Firstly, congrats on achieving the 760 GMAT. Your current score will put you in the top 5 percentile of the upcoming class for sure. As far you not confident about increasing it to 780/790, it is better to stick with the current one.
*Target the right fit school to your profile (Ivy league schools will not see a major difference with 3 point difference in Q)
You can know your right school to target by using our B school selector tool.
