Hi,

Thanks for the replies. As for the situation that made me leave: my dad suffered a stroke which caused complete right-sided hemiparalysis. I nursed and helped him through his rehab and now he can, though with assistive devices, walk again.
So I'm just not really sure how to mention my time away from work in the resume.

Would appreciate specific advice on this.

Ok, well in that case I wouldn't mention it on your resume at all. I would just list two sets of dates on your resume to reflect the time you were away from the job. Then you can address it in your personal story. There is nothing to be shy of here, feel free to just explain why you took the time away. You certainly won't be the first person who took a leave of absence to care for a sick family member.

I agree. As mentioned before, it doesn't really matter why there is a break. It is customary to just leave it off and let everything else you have going for you work in your favor. Good luck and reach out with any other questions!

IT depends on your status. If it was TRULY a leave of absence (or if you can state that with reasonable logic) then the best would be that you have no gap on your resume (but maybe explain it in an additional essay, but even that may not be necessary).

If you quit and then rejoined and it can be seen (eve retroactively) as a leave of absence, then leave the gap in and dedicate your optional essay to it.

Hello again,

Thank you all for your inputs. I ultimately decided not to mention the LOA in my resume as I felt it left the reader confused and cluttered up my resume and have chosen instead to tackle it in my optional essay.

Apologies for writing back so late, I've been busy with juggling multiple applications and it's been stressful to say the least.
