Writing in a style blending historical fiction and scientific dystopia, the novels of Octavia Butler, who has been called the “the godmother of Afrofuturism,” have won Hugo and Nebula awards as well as critical acclaim from sociologists for their exploration of racial and environmental issues.

IMO C

A) the novels of Octavia Butler, who has been called the “the godmother of Afrofuturism,” have won Hugo and Nebula awards as well as critical acclaim from sociologists for their exploration of racial and environmental issues.

B) the novels of “the godmother of Afrofuturism,” Octavia Butler, have won Hugo and Nebula awards as well as critical acclaim from sociologists for exploring racial and environmental issues.

C) Octavia Butler, who has been called the “the godmother of Afrofuturism,” has won Hugo and Nebula awards, as well as critical acclaim from sociologists for her novels’ exploration of racial and environmental issues.

D) Octavia Butler, whose novels have won Hugo and Nebula awards as well as critical acclaim from sociologists for their exploration of racial and environmental issues, has been called “the godmother of Afrofuturism.”

E) Octavia Butler’s novels, whose author is called “the godmother of Afrofuturism,” have won Hugo and Nebula awards as well as critical acclaim from sociologists for exploring racial and environmental issues.

Reasoning:-
1. Writing in a style blending historical fiction and scientific dystopia should modify Octavia Butler. A, B and E eliminated.
In a who has been called.....modified Octavia Butler's novel- which is incorrect as well.
2. In D- we get the impression that her novels have been called "the godmother of Afrofuturism".
C has nothing wrong with it.

Writing ..., the subject must be person => A, B and E are eliminated
The difference between C and D is quite subtle: for C, she has won awards and acclaim from sociologists while for D, novels have won awards and acclaim from sociologists.
I think C should be correct because the person must be winning awards.

The sentence begins with "Writing in a style blending historical fiction and scientific dystopia," and not "Written in a style .....". Thus, the subject modified by the participle modifier phrase should be the author and not the novels.

We can eliminate choices A , B and E .

D) Octavia Butler, whose novels have won Hugo and Nebula awards as well as critical acclaim from sociologists for their exploration of racial and environmental issues, has been called “the godmother of Afrofuturism.

What does "their" stand for in choice D?
Can be awards or sociologists, but neither make the sense.

Choice C fixes the issue and survives.

Errors : Writing in a style blending historical fiction and scientific dystopia, the novels of Octavia Butler, who has been called the “the godmother of Afrofuturism,” have won Hugo and Nebula awards as well as critical acclaim from sociologists for their exploration of racial and environmental issues.

1.The novels are not called “the godmother of Afrofuturism,” the author is.
2. Octavia Butler has won awards. Hence "have" is incorrect
3. Octavia Butler - Singular. Use of "their" is incorrect.
