Re-applicant to Yale. Last year, my answer to Yale's biggest commitment were more half-baked, and importantly not genuine enough. I am going with a new commitment this time - which can put off the Adcoms since your biggest commitment can't change in successive years.

My commitment this year isn't entirely new, but a far bigger extension of what I wrote last year - encapsulating parts of last year too. Is there a need to explain the reasoning / rationale behind this in the "Optional Essay" ? Re-applicant essay is only 200 words long, and I don't think is a space that merits such an explanation.

Well, it's a Yes, to write the optional essay if you're a re-applicant.
The reason why b-schools ask for essays to judge your attributes and inclinations - they look for leadership skills, the drive, and passion for innovation, value creation, and entrepreneurship.
The "optional essay" can be used to showcase your changes.
Keep in mind that the adcom is looking for a reason to accept you.. not reject you. So, take this is an opportunity and not a probe.
