Re: Yale SOM 2012 - Calling All Applicants (Class of 2014) [#permalink]
I was offered enrollment after round 1. I am an officer being sponsored by the U.S. Army. Now I have to convince a Colonel in the Army to go over the standard funding cap of $45,000 to pay for $53,900 tuition and fees price tag. My branch has the money but my peers are earning MBAs at public institutions at a quarter of the cost. I am explicitly prohibited from paying the difference out of pocket.

Any thoughts on how I can justify this as a valuable investment for the government? What can I point to in order to show Yale's cost will return a higher quality education than a state school?

Congrats on the admit!

The school didn't offer you any money? In addition to making the case to your Colonel, try to get the school to give you some sort of scholarship/fellowship/grant to make up the difference.

I'd also suggest you reach out to SOM's active military club, as well as any military alumni you know of to see how they were able to work this out. I know that they have a pretty sizable contingent, and that their club is pretty active and engaged. I'm sure they'd be happy to give advice.

The veterans club has been very helpful in many ways, I met with several of the members on Thursday. They gave me a lead at a possible fellowship offered by a separate school within Yale. To my knowledge there is no active duty Army currently attend Yale SOM who have faced this.

The admissions team has been very helpful as well. The fact that I am even at this point is due to there willingness to take into account my abnormal circumstances as an active duty military member. But, they do not have any round 1 money left to offer me. I wonder what percentage of students receive scholarships.

Good luck to everyone, thanks for the advice.

I also received an interview invite on Friday afternoon (2:47 pm New Haven time). :-D

I'm also requesting interview off-campus.

Hopefully they don't consider this a negative.

Iglesias,

You probably already thought about this, but are you not allowed to tap into your MGIbill or post 9/11 gi bill? There is also the tuition assistance program, although it caps at $4,500 per fiscal year. I have a few marines that dip into their gi bills for the top-up program, which fills the tuition gap as well.

Hey R1 waitlisters! Anyone heard anything? I retook the GMAT, updated them about a promotion, and registered for a financial math course... and it'd be really great if the re-decision happens earlier than the March 22nd R2 notification date.

Any hope for that?

hey jlm - i have heard stories of SOMers on the waitlist getting acceptance calls all the way until June! I think they might wait to review even the R3 candidates before accepting R1 waitlisters...but it really must vary based on the year so its pretty much all speculative. best of luck!

I know a good chunk of the NY-Metro contingent will be there, (myself included). Probably at least 15 or so. I've also seen some out-of-towners on the FB page mention that they'll be going, so I think it'll be pretty well-attended.

I think Yale's Round 3 stats would be similar to any other school's, and I agree with the folks in your other thread that you're a little on the low end for R3. You typically have to be a stellar candidate for any school (with 3 rounds) to offer you admission. Remember that they only get 5-10% of their class here, so you want to stand out as much as possible. I'd take the GMAT again to see if you can get above 720 (their average). You'll also need to really prove to them that you want to go to Yale, and what you can provide that they don't already have - highlight your diversity, and why Yale is the best and only place for you to bring that diverse perspective to make the world a better place.

Good luck!

Tempted to call Yale and be like "Hey can you review my file right now and let me know if you feel like interviewing me or not?? I'll wait on the other line. I'm pretty tired of checking my email and I need to focus on the Super Bowl."

First time posting my interview invite result. Just got an invite from Yale.

Wasn't 100% sure whether I'd get one given my relatively low GMAT score of 670. And no, I'm not URM or LGBT.
