Hello GMAT Club Community,
I have heard that some schools prefer younger candidates while others prefer older candidates with more work experience. This being the case, I was wondering what the preferred level/range of work experience is for the following schools:
Harvard
Stanford
Wharton
Booth
MIT
Columbia
Kellogg
Haas
Ross
NYU
Darden
Also, as a clarifying question, if the schools preferred work experience is 3 years, is this with reference to the applicant having already worked 3 years when they apply, or does it mean they have 2 full years of work experience when they apply and therefore would have 3 full years of work experience when they arrive on campus to start the MBA?
Thank you!

Hi Simba,
Both approaches work depending upon what the work experience is like. B-schools evaluate applicants on many criteria- the quality of work experience/relevance of work experience for an MBA classroom (as in what you can contribute to others' learning), career progression, leadership skills you displayed at work, your achievements and impact within your organization.
going by this, the number of years you spent at work is not that relevant as the quality of your experience. That's why b-schools ask applicants to apply when they feel most ready. Remember, an MBA is two-way learning process- you learn from the faculty and students and you also contribute to your peers' learning. That's why MBA programs will also evaluate you on what quality of experiences/ knowledge can you contribute to the class. Keep this in mind as you assess your readiness for an MBA.
