Answer: (E)

This question is looking for parallel structure: "more than three times as many ... as".
The only option that follows the correct structure while avoiding other errors is (E).

(A): as ... than - incorrect.
(B): as ... than - incorrect.
(C): as ... than - incorrect.
(D): as ... as - correct, however, the verb tense included is incorrect (occuring).
(E): Correct.

B) than are occurring. changes the tense of the verb occur relative to solid-fuel vs. gas, reject B
C) than to occur. "to" is improper, reject C
D) as those occurring. same as B, reject D
E) as occur. reject E, A is better

According to a recent study conducted by fire safety experts, on behalf of a major insurance provider, more than three times as many cooking fires occur due to the improper use of gas powered grills than those that occur due to the incorrect handling of solid-fuel powered grills.

A) than those that occur ~ Incorrect use of idiom "as many as" - "as many....than...those that occur" is incorrect usage.

B) than are occurring ~ Incorrect use of idiom "as many as" - "as many....than...those that occur" is incorrect usage.

C) than to occur ~ Incorrect use of idiom "as many as" - "as many....than...those that occur" is incorrect usage.

D) as those occurring ~ Parallelism issue between as many cooking fires occur due to and those occuring due to...

E) as occur ~ More clear Parallelism than D. as many cooking fires occur due to...as occur...

IMO E.

B) than are occurring - what are occuring?
C) than to occur - incomplete phrase, than is not needed
D) as those occurring - what does those refer here, same cooking fires or different cooking fires?
E) as occur - as many cooking fires occur due to x....as occur due to Y . much clear option

A: There is “more than” and “as”. So there cannot be “than those …” because the parallelism with then be wrong
With the same deduction, B, C are out
D: as those occurring - correct
E: as occur - as what occur. Without “those” the parallelism will be wrong.

So D

I will go with option D

Remember, the comparison is between the number of cooking fires occurring due to the improper use of gas-powered grills and the number of cooking fires occurring due to the incorrect handling of solid-fuel powered grills. Now we are connection these both parts and we have to maintain the parallelism . "as those occurring" is maintaining parallelism by connecting the second part of the comparison to the first. Hence D is the answer

as many x as y is correct structure where x and y need to be parallel.

A) than those that occur

wrong structure as describe above

B) than are occurring

wrong structure as describe above

C) than to occur

wrong structure as describe above

D) as those occurring

occurring in not parallel to occur

E) as occur

A) than those that occur
B) than are occurring
C) than to occur
D) as those occurring
E) as occur

Solution: The original underlined phrase is wrong as it misses the comparison marker 'as many as'. This rules out options A, B and C.

D) as those occurring
This option uses the correct comparison marker as many as those. CORRECT

E) as occur
This option is wrong because it doesn't use the relative pronoun 'those' here for making the comparison. INCORRECT

Option D is the right answer.

A) than those that occur => miss the parallelism needed with "as many...as" => OUT
B) than are occurring=> miss the parallelism needed with "as many...as" => OUT
C) than to occur => miss the parallelism needed with "as many...as" => OUT
D) as those occurring => seems correct.
E) as occur => as is present but "as many cooking fires occur...as...." needed a subject right after and not a verb. Wrong parallelism. => OUT

So answer D
