(A) Older adults generally have slower metabolisms and hence find it more difficult to lose weight regardless of diet plan. Not correct
(B) Younger adults tend to be more physically active, which can enhance the effectiveness of any diet plan. This doesn't solve the paradox, emphasizes it.
(C) Individuals who feel they have struggled significantly with weight for many years are more likely to adhere strictly to new diet recommendations. Could be it
(D) The new high-protein diet plan was primarily marketed towards individuals who have not previously tried structured dieting. Not really addressing anything.
(E) Most diet plans do not consider age-related metabolic changes when calculating recommended food intakes. Might be

Chose among B or E, decided B addresses better the paradox

In this case, we need to understand why the new diet is as effective for older people as it's for younger people, although normally older people struggle much more.

  • Both A and B only further fortify the paradox, by citing how easy it's for young people to lose weight and how difficult for the elders. Eliminate.

  • D is out of scope, as new or old users are not in any way shown to have specific preferences by the prompt. Eliminate.

  • E can be helpful if it didn't apply to the new diet at hand - but we have no way of knowing whether the protein diet is part of these 'most' or not. Eliminate.

Therefore, the answer is C, whereby older people are excited for the new high protein diet and truly try to take it seriously and therefore benefit from its efficiency.

Ans is C, as though new diet is better for weight loss but with that the weight loss success rates for both young adults and older adults on this new diet are nearly identical so it is possible this time old people followed more seriously.

thanks!

Nutritionist: Recent surveys indicate that people following our new high-protein diet plan tend to lose more weight than those on traditional diets. However, despite having a higher proportion of older adults who generally struggle with weight loss, the weight loss success rates for both young adults and older adults on this new diet are nearly identical.

Which of the following, if true, most helps to resolve the apparent paradox?

(A) Older adults generally have slower metabolisms and hence find it more difficult to lose weight regardless of diet plan.
(B) Younger adults tend to be more physically active, which can enhance the effectiveness of any diet plan.
(C) Individuals who feel they have struggled significantly with weight for many years are more likely to adhere strictly to new diet recommendations.
(D) The new high-protein diet plan was primarily marketed towards individuals who have not previously tried structured dieting.
(E) Most diet plans do not consider age-related metabolic changes when calculating recommended food intakes.

Hi bb and Bunuel, I had one doubt, option C talks about " Individuals who feel they have struggled significantly with weight for many years are more likely to adhere strictly to new diet recommendations", how are we sure that here the "Individuals" is only for older people. There could be a possibility that even younger people could have struggled significantly with weight for many years. Nowhere its mentioned that only older people struggle with weight for many years. Moreover, in Option B, its mentioned that younger people are active and hence can enhance the effectiveness of any diet plan. So it resolves the paradox, that although the the survey contains more older people, even youngers people have similar results, therefore defining that the new diet plan works good for older people and young people as well. Kindly reply.

(A) Older adults generally have slower metabolisms and hence find it more difficult to lose weight regardless of diet plan. - this tells that the older adults have difficulty in losing the weight but not helping to understand why the success rates are identical in young individuals and older adults, hence, ELIMINATE.

(B) Younger adults tend to be more physically active, which can enhance the effectiveness of any diet plan. - this answer choice is just concerned with the young individuals and not giving any information about the older adults, hence, ELIMINATE

(D) The new high-protein diet plan was primarily marketed towards individuals who have not previously tried structured dieting. - we are not concerned with "to whom the diet plan was marketed", we are concerned to find out the reason behind the identical success rates which this answer choice is not helping to understand. ELIMINATE

(E) Most diet plans do not consider age-related metabolic changes when calculating recommended food intakes. - Reason to eliminate this option is "most", not because it is a superlative but it is saying about the diets in general that "most" diets do not consider age-related metabolic changes...This is not helping us answer the question about the reason behind the identical success rate and also the diet plan that is discussed in the passage, it might or might not be in the "most" that this option is talking about and still it will not help in answering the question where we are concerned about finding the reason behind the identical success rate. ELIMINATE

(C) Individuals who feel they have struggled significantly with weight for many years are more likely to adhere strictly to new diet recommendations. - Given in the passage: "older adults who generally struggle with weight loss". Based on this we can infer that since the older adults struggled with the weight loss for many years, they are more likely to adhere strictly to the new diet recommendations and this is the reason behind the identical success rates. This is the best answer choice among all the given options.

Hence, Option (C) is the right answer.
