Work experience will be key for you, so waiting it out and gaining some experience is your best bet. You also want to make sure you're goals are clear - you don't want to appear as someone who just likes to earn extra letters at the end of their name. What will you do after your MBA? If an MBA truly needed? Best of luck!

Will my law school GPA (3.75+) have any mitigating factor on my undergrad GPA? I figure graduating in this range of my law school class shows that I have the aptitude to at least be a 3.5 student rather than a 2.4 student and I'm willing to work.

I know most grad programs are inflated but I figure this might be slightly different since law school has a mandated curve and I'd think is harder than undergrad. (Half my law school class had over a 3.7 undergrad.)

I would say this helps, because it proves you have the ability to handle graduate level coursework. Now those analytical skills b-schools love so much won't really be assessed but still this is a positive for your application

While it doesn't erase your 2.4, it certainly helps. It also builds a foundation to tell a story for what you learned from your UG experience. This is something to highlight in an optional essay when the time is right. Best of luck!

I would recommend to wait to get work experience... at least 3 years.
In that way, you will diminish the relative importance of your GPA.

My advice to you would be as follows:

1) Think about what you need the MBA for.

2) If you want to work in an MBA type role (read strategy consulting, etc.), then the question would be - why are you in law school now? That aside, I would recommend that you finish school as early as possible, try to get some decent work experience and throw your hat in the ring for admissions to top B-schools. Your undergraduate GPA will be a factor, but the rest of your profile should have enough to mitigate that.

3) But if you are happy being a lawyer, and just want some interesting work experience that has elements of business strategy in it, I would recommend that you add on the extra year right now, and get into a good (meaning something that you are likely to enjoy) role immediately after your dual degree.

Best wishes,
Karthik

First off, the bad: I have a 2.4 grade point from undergrad in an easy major at a directional state school. (Think like political science at Southern Illinois) I actually had a downward trend.

The good:
I'm currently a rising third year enrolled in a top 30 law school (Minnesota/USC/Emory/Notre Dame/Wisconsin/Indiana) with above a 3.75. On the curve I'm in the top 10-25% of the class. I currently have no work experience but I'll probably have an offer at a biglaw firm and I have a decent shot at MBA type F500 corporate strategy/consulting offers. I have above average extracurriculars from both undergrad and grad school. I also have a 730+ GMAT. I'm also a white male.

The big question. I currently can do a JD/MBA with a top 30 MBA program that will only take an extra year of school right now. Or I can wait and try and apply to business schools in 3-4 years after my degree with pretty good work experience. I'm curious whether with a good application, I'll have the ability to go to a top school?

Other factors: Financially I don't think that a school that doesn't have incredibly good on campus recruiting and name recognition will be worth it in 3-4 years versus going immediately right now. For example I think going to Northwestern in 3-4 years might be worth it since I'll have access to more employers and my average classmates will have more interesting experiences than going to say UNC in 3-4 years. Nothing against the UNC level schools but I'm not sure if financially it will be worth it if I can go to a somewhat comparable school right now for much cheaper.
