Ann: All the campers at Camp Winnehatchee go to Tri-Cities High School
Bill: That‟s not true. Some Tri-Cities students are campers at Camp Lakemont.
Bill‟s answer can be best explained on the assumption that he has interpreted Ann‟s remark to mean that

(A) most of the campers at Camp Lakemont come from high schools other than TriCities

(B) most Tri-Cities High School students are campers at Camp Winnehatchee

(C) some Tri-Cities High School students have withdrawn from Camp Lakemont

(D) all Tri-Cities High School students have withdrawn from Camp Lakemont

(E) only campers at Camp Winnehatchee are students at Tri-Cities High School

Bill invariably assumes that every T school student is a camper at camp W ! which means only W campers are students at T school !

(E) only campers at Camp Winnehatchee are students at Tri-Cities High School

let us assume that camers at camp winnehatchee = 100 and all 100 go to tri cities high school
bill say not true some campers (e.g20) are from camp lake mount.
but ann never says campers of any other location go to tri cities hgh school.
so bill thinks ann says all are from camp winnehatchee.

(A) Incorrect most of the campers at Camp Lakemont come from high schools other than TriCities.
o

(B) Incorrect most Tri-Cities High School students are campers at Camp Winnehatchee

(C) Incorrect some Tri-Cities High School students have withdrawn from Camp Lakemont

(D) Incorrect all Tri-Cities High School students have withdrawn from Camp Lakemont

(E) Correct only campers at Camp Winnehatchee are students at Tri-Cities High School
pre-thinking matches with E.
negated E will break down the conclusion

The statement by Ann means that the students at Tri-cities High school goto Camp Winnehatchee only,or only Tri cities High school students goto Camp Winnehatchee.

I chose E by odding other options out but I am not clear about the stimulus "Bill‟s answer can be best explained on the assumption that he has interpreted Ann‟s remark to mean that" - what does it really mean?

Why is option D wrong?

Here, we need to concentrate on what Ann Said? He said All the campers at Camp Winnehatchee go to Tri-Cities High School. But Bill refuted what ann said and opined that some Tri-Cities students are campers at Camp Lakemont. While saying so, Bill assumed that only campers at Camp Winnehatchee are students at Tri-Cities High School. Here we need to concentrate on Camp Winnehatchee.

if Bill's and Ann's place were reversed in the question i.e. Ann‟s answer can be best explained on the assumption that he has interpreted Bill‟s remark to mean that, then answer would have been option D. ( of course we need to modify the argument little bit).

Please correct me if i am wrong.

this question belongs to a special type b/c test takers will have to identify the question.
It is a mix of responding and inference question, not explanation or assumption question.

Ones can use Venn diagram or the classical inference pattern for this question.
After all other option choices are eliminated. E is the answer.
The source is good for practicing.
Ones should not spend too much time on 1 question.
