Howdy,
I took GMAT yesterday and scored expected 730 with Q50, V38, IR 7 breakdown. While this is a great score couple of factors are playing on my mind.
GMAT Buckets
This is just my made up analysis based on how my applications went last year when I applied with 680(Q49, V34) and my observation with few of the other applicants whom I came to know during last year admission cycle. Top schools usually throw scores in 3 buckets- 680 to 700, 710-730, 740 and above. Even though there is a good difference between 680 and 700 or 710 and 730 for that matter but one would be surprised that schools also considerably weight in favor of 740 than 730. Is it true? Experts - Agree or Disagree?
New GMAT Format will increase average GMAT by 10/20 points in Top Schools
I was unfortunate that the week before my exam I got email that GMAC will allow test takers to attempt Q, V before AWA and IR section. As per them this change should not effect the applicants score. However I strongly disagree. The fatigue is one of the most important factor test takers struggle when reaching the end of exam. This become even more prominent if Verbal is the most dreadful section for you. Taking Verbal when your mind is relatively much fresh and already on test mode(after attempting Quant) will most likely inflate your score by atleast 2 points.
If I will be re-taking exam that will be based on the new format. Thus I may very likely score >=740. More so if I decide not to I will be competing with applicants who may have scored 710 but with this change their score will inflate to 730 and hence my current score is further diluted.
The main doubt I have now is- Is it worth the efforts? I haven't had much life outside work and prep for GMAT in last 3-3.5 months. I am burntout and if I take a break of say 4 weeks I will lose my rhythm. Even if everything goes as expected and I do score 740 is putting extra 80-100 hrs of work worth it? I am in dilemma whether to use this time to freshen up before jumping into Essays or to forget what-ifs and continue with "Karma- Hard Work!". Please advice?
If it helps you answer below are my target schools:
Kellogg- 1 Year
Wharton
Darden
ISB
IIM A(PGPX)
Thank You.
Hi ag111,
Firstly, congratulations on making it from 680 to 730. It's a feat not many candidates are able to achieve!
It is a misconception that schools throw GMAT scores into a buckets. There is no universal rule to GMAT evaluation and all schools have their own proprietary rules for evaluating applications. What can be stated with surety is that with a score of 730, GMAT would not be the reason for you not getting an admit.
A score of 740 will not much difference to your application, and we think that it's time to give yourself a pat on the back and move on to building clear and articulate and a stellar application.
Spend your time working on your essays and you will benefit much more! All the best and feel free to get in touch for more.
