According to FlightStats, the average on-time arrival rate for all U.S. airlines was 70% for the three-month period ending August this year down from 80% for the same period last year. Considering this statistic along with the fact that United Airlines was the only airline to improve its on-time arrival rate during this period from 75% last year to 80% this year, it should be logical to expect that __________________________.
If the information given in the above passage is true, which of the following must be true?
A. For the three months under consideration, the average on-time arrival rate of the all the other US airlines last year was better than the on-time arrival rate of United Airlines this year.
B. For the three months under consideration, removing the stats of United Airlines would reduce the decline in the on-time arrival rate of the US airlines
C. For the three months under consideration this year, the on-time arrival rate of United is the highest among that of all airlines.
D. For the three months under consideration, no US airline improved its on-time arrival rate even by one percentage point compared to last year.
E. For the three months under consideration, United Airlines gained at least some market share compared to last year.
................................................................................. Last Year ................... This Year
Average on-time arrival rate for all U.S. airlines.......... 80%................................ 70%
On-time arrival rate of United Airline...........................75%................................ 80%
Last year, United Airline was pulling down the average since it was below average. This year, it is pulling up the average since it is more than the average (so the average of rest of the airlines would be below 70%. United Airline (UA) pulled the average up to 70%)
A. For the three months under consideration, the average on-time arrival rate of the all the other US airlines last year was better than the on-time arrival rate of United Airlines this year.
Average on time arrival of all the other airlines last year --> More than 80% (UA had 75% which pulled down the average)
On time arrival rate of UA this year --> 80%
So 'average on time arrival rate of all others' last year was better than 'on time arrival rate of UA' this year.
Correct.
B. For the three months under consideration, removing the stats of United Airlines would reduce the decline in the on-time arrival rate of the US airlines
Decline in on time arrival rate of all US airlines - 10% points from 80% to 70%
If we remove the stats of UA (80%), the decline will increase, not decrease. The average on time arrival rate of all others will go below 70%.
C. For the three months under consideration this year, the on-time arrival rate of United is the highest among that of all airlines.
We don't know that. We just know about US airlines, not all airlines so anyway ignore.
D. For the three months under consideration, no US airline improved its on-time arrival rate even by one percentage point compared to last year.
We know that UA improved its time by 5% points. Not true.
E. For the three months under consideration, United Airlines gained at least some market share compared to last year.
No discussion of market share.
Answer (A)
