Hi Jerz,

1.) Most students take the university health plan unless they can get covered by their spouse. You can definitely find a cheaper option though. I think you can get a virtually identical plan from Blue Cross/Blue Shield for closer to $125/month.

2.) I think 2100/month at an Optima is a pretty good deal for a 2BR/2Bath. It is an even better deal if that price includes parking. The newer buildings in Evanston are significantly nicer with much better amenities.

Hope this helps.

So, I have two main questions, mostly for River, but anyone else feel free to chime in.

1. Do most students take the university health plan?
It seems a little high for me at about $200 a month for the coverage you receive. I'm trying to price around, but it seems you can get similar insurance for around $150 -$175 a month. What are your thoughts?

2. I've been looking at housing options and it seems Optima would be a great place for me and a roommate that will be named later. Is $2,100 for a 2 BR about average, low, or high end? Also what would be your recommendations for a single guy looking for an in unit W/D, close location to campus, and downtown? Other features are negotiable. 1500 Chicago Ave. also seems nice, isn't that where Jerz is planning to live? Where do most of the single students live?

Any help would be appreciated. Maybe it's time for a River's Guide to Evanston Housing Options?

Thanks guys. I was thinking of subletting the parking spaces for the unit since I won't have a car. Might be a nice way to supplement the rent.

I also need to find a roommate if anyone is interested.

Also, it does seem Blue Cross/Blue Shield offers much cheaper options than the University. Considering I go to the doctor once a year for a physical and that's it, these plans would cost half as much and save me $125 a month.

Great point. A second parking spot cost me a lot of $$ and I would imagine it would be the same in Evanston. I think second parking spots rent for $175-$250 additional per month here--make sure you inquire about that prior to signing anything in the Optima. All Optima units will have W/D in the unit.

I'm heading out to Evanston this weekend to look at apartments. Unfortunately, I didn't realize until after I booked my flight that most students will probably still be on Spring Break. In any event, I was still able to line up a couple of apartment visits on my own, as well as an appointment with a realtor. I'll let you guys know what I find out, I'm looking at studios/1 bdrms.

You know this. Mid-August most likely.

Hey river,

Quick question: Just wondering what the textbooks are for finance 1/2 and DECS 433 and DECS 434? Since I'm gonna be in the States for a couple of days next week, I was thinking I might as well order the books from amazon. Chances are I won't be coming back till school starts after this trip. Then I can go through the books in July in advance for the waiver (hopefully).

Bummer, it would've been great to put a face with a name. Have fun with Mrs. Ripper and enjoy the time off.

I'd like to spend not much more than a thousand if I can. I live in a great apartment now with all of the amenities, but frankly I just don't use them. I finally got around to sending my deposit check the other day, so I will hopefully be seeing many of you in a few months. I'm excited. Honestly, DAK and meeting so many current students really sealed the deal for me.

Looking forward to meeting you this fall.

After looking at the Optima, I think I'll probably get suckered into paying more than I ought to for an apartment.

I know, doesn't Optima look really cool? Plus in unit w/d. I will never live in a building where I have to go down to the basement to do laundry and worry about people stealing my clothes.

My strategy is just to not look at it, then I'll fine with some piece of junk.

If you can stand a roommate that is definitely a way to get a lot more for your money. 2000 to 2400 will get you a really nice 2 bedroom, some with 1.5 or 2 baths...finding a really nice 1 bedroom for a grand would be impossible. If you dont need all the features of the newer buildings you can find places that are fine just not fancy for 1200 for a one bedroom.

cs11...nice to see another Sox fan heading to Kellogg. We occasionally get together and watch games at the bars. There is a pretty big group of Bostons sports fans here.

I knew I picked the right school. I'm also pretty excited to see Wrigley next spring, I've had a new found appreciate for the Cubs ever since we broke our streak back in '04.
