Do you guys happen to know when the deadline to sign up for KWEST is?
Just curious, are there other people besides myself who may not be able to go? Would you be interested in participating in an alternative "Chicago KWEST" where we spend two or three days doing stuff in the Chicago area before school?

I would say like 10-20% of people dont go KWEST. The vast majority of people do but I know several people who didnt for various reasons. One had a friends wedding, some went to the olympics in China, and someone else got married a few weeks before so they were on their honeymoon. You can sign up as late as you can but they fill up. There are some cancelations though so they do have a waitlist. I know someone who got in off the WL in like July and ended up on a trip after someone had to bail. If you look at whats available now I would say half will be filled already.
There are people who don't go that do travel on their own, if you decide to do that it might be more fun to take a car and go somewhere else in the US/Canada for the week. Or fly somewhere in the US like NYC, Boston, San Fran. You definitely could do a trip like that far cheaper than KWEST.
A reasonable trip in the US that would be fun if you are into the outdoors is to drive to the southwest corner of South Dakota...within a pretty small area are some really amazing sites. Mount Rushmore, The Badlands, Black Hills National Forest, Devils Tower..and some wicked tourist attraction/traps along the way such as the Corn Palace and Wall Drug. You could do a drive out to Rapid City which is right near those places in a very long day or stop in Minneapolis on the way.
