Yeah if you think about it, its shouldnt really be all that shocking. A huge portion of a Dean's job is fundraising and that requires a lot of time away from home. It has to be a strain on a family traveling the world constantly and it has to be tough to beg for money all the time when the economy is in the tank. I am sure heading back to work for the marketing department as a professor will be a huge lifestyle improvement at this point.
Totally agree that it isn't shocking that he's leaving, but I hope the decision has much more to do with what's best for Kellogg than Jain's lifestyle. I hope that the sort of person who would accept the position of dean would thoroughly enjoy traveling and fundraising and would have a strong sense of responsibility to the school. I.e., I hope they'd put the school above their lifestyle needs; and it would be even better if the demands of the position fit their lifestyle. Which means that when it comes time to step down, I hope the decision is motivated by what's best for Kellogg, rather than any negatives of holding the position. Jain seemed to thoroughly enjoy being dean - at least that's how he came across during his speech at DAK II. So, my guess is that he's stepping down because he believes its the right time for Kellogg to be under new leadership. If that's his motivation, then kudos to him for realizing that the school is bigger than him.
Wow - I couldn't disagree more strongly. Eight years = 10% of his life. I think that's more than enough to dedicate to a school. In the end, it's just his job, and if he feels it's time to dedicate more time to himself and his family, more power to him.
