I forget - anyone in NYC? Its official, I'm going to be in Manhattan for the summer at a solar startup.

Also, anyone got any good ideas for best ways to go about getting a sublet remotely :)

Steel, I'll be in the NYC area through July, so let me know when you get here. I think nink, solaris1, terp26 and a few others will be around too. Unfortunately I don't live in NYC so my idea would be to look on Craigslist. Or you may want to post something on the discussion board in the admitted student website, and see if any NYC admits are looking to sublet until their lease expires.

Few of our summer interns at my old firm used the following summer housing service.

That is actually a fantastic idea. Rockin - we'll have to get people together.

Shocker to us as well - didn't see it coming. Good thing is he'll still be around on the faculty.

Really curious who will be his replacement....

He said he wanted to go back to teaching very soon during his DAK speech. Doesn't seem that surprising.

Yeah if you think about it, its shouldnt really be all that shocking. A huge portion of a Dean's job is fundraising and that requires a lot of time away from home. It has to be a strain on a family traveling the world constantly and it has to be tough to beg for money all the time when the economy is in the tank. I am sure heading back to work for the marketing department as a professor will be a huge lifestyle improvement at this point.

Jain has been dean for 8 years, so that may also contribute significantly to the decision. I see a lot of value in switching the dean every 8-12 years because (a) the organization doesn't become overly dependent on any one individual; and (b) the organization can be "refreshed" by new leadership. Continuous renewal through leadership replacement every 8-12 years was the norm at my undergrad institution (for these reasons), and I think it worked extremely well. As for Kellogg's history, Jacobs was dean from 1975-2001, and although it sounds like he did a great job, I'd be concerned if such long periods were the standard. So, bottom line, I see Jain's departure as a sign that Kellogg may have a healthy organization given that he's so popular. I.e., this is a good thing, even though I like Jain a lot.

Totally agree that it isn't shocking that he's leaving, but I hope the decision has much more to do with what's best for Kellogg than Jain's lifestyle. I hope that the sort of person who would accept the position of dean would thoroughly enjoy traveling and fundraising and would have a strong sense of responsibility to the school. I.e., I hope they'd put the school above their lifestyle needs; and it would be even better if the demands of the position fit their lifestyle. Which means that when it comes time to step down, I hope the decision is motivated by what's best for Kellogg, rather than any negatives of holding the position. Jain seemed to thoroughly enjoy being dean - at least that's how he came across during his speech at DAK II. So, my guess is that he's stepping down because he believes its the right time for Kellogg to be under new leadership. If that's his motivation, then kudos to him for realizing that the school is bigger than him.

Wow - I couldn't disagree more strongly. Eight years = 10% of his life. I think that's more than enough to dedicate to a school. In the end, it's just his job, and if he feels it's time to dedicate more time to himself and his family, more power to him.

That's cool, I can certainly appreciate keeping life in perspective (family vs. job, etc.).
