I got waitlisted at McManus.

I'm not gonna lie - this is pretty devastating. I thought there was preference given both to families and students living internationally. I am completely unprepared to live somewhere else. Moreover, I was really counting on the other families being a support network for my wife (who is an international moving to the States for the first time), as well as being able to sneak home more often than not.

Really really really really really disappointed, and shocked.

Hey man, really sorry to hear about that. I'm crossing my fingers that you'll find a great alternative that will work well for you and your family.

Waitlisted at McManus also. It's going to be a pain to find an apartment sitting 12 hours away.

Anyone looking for a roommate?

I heard from a current student that McManus is pretty lopsided - i.e. there are a bunch of 2Y's living there next year, and there will be tons of spots next summer. Bad for us, unfortunately...

That bites monkbent. Have you considered Englehart (sp?) - the other family housing building? That might have some more options. It won't be as close as McManus but will give your wife that int'l community...

Also, there are several buildings that have tons of Kellogg students, which could provide the sense of community that would cushion the transition for your wife. Park Evanston and Sherman Plaza have lots of students, although both are a bit pricey. There are others as well.

I found my place online without visiting first, which was easier than I had anticipated. The resources on Kellogg's admit website were extremely helpful, and there are tons of websites w/ pictures of units for rent. Later, when I saw my unit in person, there were no surprises - it was exactly what I had expected. The key for me was asking tons of questions and getting as many pictures as you need.

Sorry to hear it monkbent. Did the McManus people give you any hint as to how long the waitlist is, the timing for decisions and your odds? I recall one of the websites saying that they can usually accommodate almost everyone.

Yeah by the sound of it not many 1st years are moving out of McManus this year and a bunch are moving in. If you study abroad you dont have to rent for that quarter so its a huge selling point for a lot of folks to save 4K+. Isa's make a great suggestion of trying Englehart, which is actually closer to campus than a lot of other buildings just a littler further from downtown. 1500 Chicago is one of the more popular places, Sherman Plaza is not very popular due to costs (big $$$) I think there are only 6-9 1st years there. The optimas and Park Evanston are really popular on the high end. 1500 is probably the most popular middle of the road. There is a collection of places on Hinman that are really popular on the "vintage" side. I have several friends who have 2 bedrooms in that area.

Monk don't stress too much about your wife settling in, the international JVs tend to stick within their own groups due to culture and language. Plus many don't have jobs because of visas and more tend to have kids or have them shortly after arriving. She will certainly settle in with friends and unlike lots of schools even if you arent in student housing everyone is pretty confined to a relatively small part of a suburb not spread through many neighborhoods of a city.

Best of luck and definitely reach out to student affairs (housing people) with your concerns. They are 100x more helpful usually than admissions ever was.

You mean my concerns about my wife? I think they're sick of me - I submitted April 1 at 12:01 AM and called them on May 4th and of course emailed yesterday...

Anyhow, you've already nailed the places I'm looking at - 1500 Chicago and Hinman....

So, I was checking out 1500 Chicago, building looks nice. Just one question, any idea how AT&T cellphone reception is inside the building? Are there any blind spots? And, in general, how is AT&T across Evanston?

The only reason I ask is because when I was in New York, I had great reception everywhere except my bedroom for one entire year, and that was the most frustrating thing in the entire world. Want to try avoiding such frustrations as much as possible. :-D

I have decent reception with att all over evanston. I dont think you will have an issue.

So some insight for you guys. Applications were up 6% this year, it sounds like they are in the process of filling out the class with the WL at this point. About 83% of 1st years have reported they are no longer looking for internships and around 70-75% of 2nd years are no longer looking...I know some have offers but are still looking since they have time until decision dates and they want to make sure they are making the right decision unlike internships you really want to get this one right.

Building timeline looks like move in will be in 2013-2014 so after we are all gone. But they will definitely hit us up for money I am sure. Site is set, working on raising the capital and they are starting to look into architects.

New Profs. They said this was the best year they have ever had with attracting top notch people. Most of their senior hires sound like they will be really good, a fin prof from Booth, a marketing guy who was prof last year at NYU, and a strategy prof who won best elective 15 times in a row. They only lost one prof this year (I believe to Stanford) and she was good but nothing spectacular so overall definitely made some improvements.

Thanks for the update riverripper. On the internships, is no longer looking the same as having found an internship, or are there a chunk of people who haven't found one but have just given up looking at this point?

I think no longer looking means you have
1) accepted an offer
2) have offers you are deciding between
3) going back to employer/family business
4) aren't planning on working (I have a few friends who are sponsored and plan on taking the summer off)

Basically I think the stat is more of 16-17% of the people are still actively looking and then the rest fit into one of the above. I would say about 80% have offers they have accepted at this point. Overall they did admit it was a pretty brutal year for internships, they didnt seem as concerned with fulltime stuff since it isnt as pressing of an issue since most people take the summer off anyways.

They also told us how they have set aside an extra 500k to pay people who take unpaid internships. Usually that works out to like 1k a week so that is enough to pay around 50 people for the summer. Thats on top of all the previous programs they had to pay for internships. So its nice to hear how much the school is stepping up to help people since they realize that unpaid stuff is extremely tough on people.

I have a bit of an off-topic question. I'm thinking of selling my car and buying a scooter when I move to Evanston. Do you know if any Kellogg students ride scooters and if there is an easy place to park one on campus?

I see a vespa parked in the bike rack area on occasion. Definitely not a useful vehicle in the winter. You might be better off with a zipcar or something like that. The walk to campus is not too bad, and some people bike during the winter when its not snowing. Depending on where you are living it might just be a waste. You cant really do much grocery shopping with a bike and the walk to school is < 1 mile for almost everyone.
