I'm about as far as Boogs and it's pretty easy so far.

A little time consuming as I don't want to whizz through it and mess up something little (start off school right, right?) but definitely not very difficult so far. Maybe I'm biased coming from a quantitative background. Probably not.

I decided to go with the deal posted on the 2010 laptop thread: https://slickdeals.net/permadeal/35010/l ... win-7-prem

It ended up being cheaper than the KLP machine, and I also got an ultrabase, wifi upgrade, and processor upgrade, but I won't get the KIS support, webcam, or 3 year warranty. The webcam shouldn't be a big deal, and I am crossing my fingers that any issues are fixable by me. I ultimately chose to get a similar model to the official laptop because it will be easier to share software settings, power adapters, etc with classmates.

Re: Course waivers and first year classes.

I'm an engineer background, in the MMM program. In the first quarter I take...

- Two 0.5 credit classes from Engineering school. Mandatory.
- Accounting 430. Basic financial accounting. MIGHT BE ABLE TO WAIVE.
- Mgt 431. I will be taking this.
- A choice of Marketing 430, Finance I, Turbo Finance (i.e. finance I/II), MECN 430.

My undergrad grades were poor because I had a lot of fun. Before applying for an MBA, I took accounting classes to boost my GPA at nearby University of Washington. I basically took their first financial accounting, second financial accounting, and managerial accounting. I got an "A" in every one, and as far as I know top grade in the class and on the final in each as well.

I looked at the Accnting 430 description, and I think I could get by with waiving it. There may be a very small amount of material that I hadn't previously covered, but it should be small.

Option1 (least agressive):
- Don't waive accounting.
- Take normal finance 1.

Option2:
- Don't waive accounting (it will be an easy class since most material already covered)
- Take turbo finance.

Option3:
- Waive accounting, take marketing in its place.
- Take normal finance 1.

Option 4 (most agressive)
- Waive accounting, take marketing in its place
- Take turbo finance (I+II)

Any opinions? Is there much recruiting in the fall quarter? I'm considering option 4 (or maybe 3).

I heard the Accounting course is very basic, so it might be most efficient to waive out of it. My plan is to waive Accounting and take Turbo Finance. I'd rather have the extra elective than separate Fin 1 and Fin 2

I thought MMM had to take TurboFin?

Turbo is recommended but not mandatory for MMM. This was talked about at the admit weekend. Also, when I go to the "core course selection page" after signing in on the website, Finance 430 is an option.

Thanks for the heads up about the accounting class, sir.

Some questions about the waiver process:

Is it true that you have to have taken the class within the last 5 years?

Also, do you have to provide a syllabus for each of the classes you're trying to waive?

I'm not sure how strict they are on the 5 year rule.

As for the syllabus, I'd think any supporting documentation that can accurately convey what was covered in the course would be sufficient. So yes I think a syllabus for each class you're trying to waive would be good, but not necessary if you can provide other documentation.

Separate question:
When does recruiting happen? I read Ryhme's guide to management consulting recruiting, and he mentioned that consulting recruiting occurs 3-4 weeks into recruiting. When is that?

My understanding is that summer internship interviews start in January, but recruiting events begin within weeks of hitting campus, with chats/meet and greets/presentations.

I know it says that to waive a course you need a grade of "good to excellent". So would it be wise to attempt to try to waive courses you've received Bs in? It's hard to gauge what they consider "good"

Also, would it be wise to waive more than 3 of the core 6 classes? I was a finance and economics major as an undergrad so am trying to waive accounting, finance, operations and microeconomics - however, will that look bad when recruiting season comes around? (my goal is to get into management consulting).

Another question for the masses...what do you think about having a car?

I'd like to sell mine and get a nice chunk of cash instead. No insurance payments each month is another big plus.

Do you think this is feasible?

If you live near campus, it looks like not having a car is not too inconvenient. A first year at DAK mentioned that she used her car so rarely that the battery died.

The 5-year rule is not strict. I passed out of DECS 433 despite having taken it well over 5 years in the past. I think they care more about the topics covered and how you did than they do about precisely how long ago you took it.

Hmm. maybe I've been slacking out a bit, but had no idea there was pre-school homework? Is it on admitted students' website?
And then, I could only find accommodation at 2215 Ridge, a block away from Reserve. Looks like I'll have to take a long shuttle ride to downtown. Any thoughts on that side of Evanston?
thank you

I guess one would have to take a Grad level accounting course to waive Accounting? I have to check and see if my U.Texas evening course qualifies. I'm planning to take Turbo Fin too, but considering my background (Engg), I've been advised by some second years not to be too aggressive, cos they skip over plenty of stuff in Turbo fin.

And did anyone get the answer on how much recruiting there is in the Fall qtr?
thanks
