Since there are limited number of units at McManus, I've started looking out for some apartments. I know many people from class of 2011 were waitlisted there.

Coming back to your question, Unhedged, I'm open to both. It depends partly on my budget and partly on the roommate.

But one thing is clear, I want to graduate with as less debt as possible.

May be you can give some updates to us internationals on how is the renting/leasing scenario in Evanston after you come back from DAK II

So I'm playing around with an idea in my head. I'm going to Chicago Booth and would like to live downtown with a roommate. Instead of shacking up with someone who goes to my school, why not try and find a place with someone going to Kellogg looking to live in the city? That way, both of us can extend our networks and get involved (albeit minimally) with some interesting things going on at their neighbor MBA program.

What do you all think about that idea?

Hi Everyone,

I've been having a hard time connecting to current students. Specifically, I'm interested in talking to students who are in SEEK. I've emailed some of the student groups like Net Impact, but have not received a response. Is there a better way to get in touch with current students?

Thanks!

I'd imagine DAK will be a good opportunity to do so as well as some of the admitted students events (we have one for nyc coming up). I am looking to connect with some ppl about SEEK as well, so I'll pass on any info I come across.

Can you pass on any info about the NYC event? Where do you find out about these? Thanks.

Jerz,

I've started to do some research on a few places incase I don't get an accomodation at McManus. I think 1500 chicago is fairly popular. Are there any other places that are not as costly as Optimas and Park Evanston but popular with the students?

Also, I was wondering what websites are good for apartment hunting. I need to figure something out as I cannot come to DAK and I'm so many timezones away.

Waiting till last week of May only to find out that I'm waitlisted at McManus would be terrible

1500 Chicago is very popular, there are a ton of Kellogg students that live in that building. Off the top of my head, another very popular cheaper option is 1600 Hinman, and I know a couple people who live in 1410 Chicago. The housing excel sheet should give you a sense of where people live and what rent is in the different buildings.

@bsyde - it is true that there are a lot of internationals in McManus. I think partially because it's easier to deal with the housing application for McManus from overseas than it is to try and find an apartment on your own. For a lot of the US students, especially those coming from the major cities on the east coast, it's a very short, cheap flight to get to DAK or to Evanston to look for an apartment.

ge827 - the Admissions Office sends out invitations for these events to all admitted students in the cities where they're having receptions. If you want to attend and didn't get an invite, I'd suggest contacting the Admissions Office to be added to the invitation list.

My current plan is to live alone, but I am open to having a roommate if I find the right match at DAK or at one of the local meetups.

It looks like my time during DAK weekend will be very packed and tiring, so I will likely go on the housing tour but not do much more besides getting a feel for the area. I prefer to start my lease in August anyway, so I might just have to fly back June or July to find a specific place to rent.

I've been poring over the housing spreadsheet and cross referencing with maps in the meantime, and identifying buildings of interest.

For current students, is there any significant advantage in having university health coverage? It looks significantly more expensive than independent coverage, and those with non-campus insurance can still use NUHS (https://www.nuhs.northwestern.edu/evanston/eligible.aspx). I am thinking of just getting my own coverage right after leaving my job, so I can avoid pricey COBRA and save some money for insurance in school as well.

I have coverage through BCBS of Illinois that I purchased independently of the school, and am perfectly happy with it. I have a $250 deductible and $3000 OOP, and pay about $130 a month. I've seen doctors at NUHS for free, and had to go to an independent clinic for x-rays last fall (NUHS was closed that day) and the BCBS process was really painless to find a doctor and deal with payment.

Obviously everyone's health needs are different, but there's no significant disadvantage to getting independent coverage if you find a plan that's right for you.

Thanks. I was living in Boston when I applied and so I just received some info about a Boston event. I'll be in NYC for the next few months though so will be coming to the NYC event. Found the facebook group as well. Thanks for the help. Looking forward to meeting you all at some of these events and at DAK.

I'm having some trouble with the financial aid app. I'm an international.

Kellogg hasn't responded to my question for more than two days (presumably overloaded).
If someone else has already submitted or is familiar with the form/process can you please PM me?

They need 2 weeks. I submitted mine last week and haven't heard since.

If I were in your position, I'd wait till next week

Hey everyone, congrats on your admittance to Kellogg. I'll be at DAK II as well. Hope to see you all there.

I submitted my financial aid information last week and I haven't heard anything. I agree with unplugged. I'd wait for at least 2 weeks before calling the financial aid office.

The Kellogg Laptop Program model has been posted:

Its a Lenovo x201: 12' screen, Intel i5 2.4GHz, 4 GB RAM, 3.5 lbs for 1285.

I read some reviews on endaget, and its supposed to be a really good laptop, but 1285 seems pretty pricey when an equivalent Asus is like 800.

unhedged, you beat me to the punch. It's not a bad laptop, but I may go with the ASUS. The positive with this is that you get the support (not a big deal for a techie like me) and software preloaded. Since a lot of the other laptops I am looking at don't have an optical drive, I wonder if that is an issue.

Don't worry about the software, Kellogg gives you a copy of Office when you get here regardless of whether you have a KLP or not. So far, the only software I've needed that I had to buy was SPSS (stats software) but there's rumors that next year the school will be giving every student stats software (probably Stata) for free.

Do you all know how/where to access the Kellogg housing spreadsheet mentioned above? I am going to Evanston this weekend to try and find an apartment, and would like to take a gander at this spreadsheet before I go.

Thanks.
