Sorry to be posting here before getting an admit.

Does anyone who attended DAK-1 know how many MMM admits were present?

Hey y'all,

You've got a new classmate. I got an email informing me about my admit. But when I called back I couldn't reach her. Has anyone of you faced the same problem?

When did the internationals receive the admit packet( after how many days of acceptance)? As of now, I don't have a login and pw for admitted students website

Cheers,

Unplugged

In, planning to attend DAK. I haven't been able to get back in touch with adcom either even though they left more than one voice mail for me and sent email. Not sure when the package comes. Hopefully receive the package or get in touch soon because need to start planning logistics for DAK and applying for Financial Aid.

Hi there, excited to be on this thread! Where is everyone planning to live? I'm a bit hesitant about living in Evanston bc I'm a big city person, but I hear some ppl DO live in Chicago (although that makes it more difficult to socialize with your classmates). Thoughts?

I keep on getting in trouble for posting on the wrong thread! Anyway, 2 questions:

1. Living situation - where to live? possible to live in chicago and commute and still get the full Kellogg experience?

2. DAK - I can only attend one day and was planning on attending Thursday night and Friday (so I can get a better take on Evanston) Which day is better to attend?

Very, very few people live in Chicago and commute. I know exactly 2 people who do it, and they both live with spouses who have jobs in Chicago. By far, the vast majority of students live in Evanston. Many of my friends came from living in major cities (including a few that moved from Chicago to Evanston) and have found living in Evanston to be ok. While definitely not a city, downtown Evanston (where most students live) has a bunch of restaurants, coffee shops, shopping and bars, so it's not totally suburban. That said, we do spend a decent amount of social time in Chicago so it's not that you're completely stuck in Evanston if you live here. Personally, I think part of what builds such a strong sense of community here is that we do all live close to each other. It's not entirely without it's downside - I think living so close tends to make the school a little gossipy at times - but overall it's nice being close to my friends.

As for DAK, there are informal welcome receptions on Thursday night (4/22), with registration and the start of programming on Friday morning, and it officially ends on Saturday night (with optional housing tours in Evanston on Sunday morning, 4/25). As for which day to attend, it's hard to say which day is "better". Friday is slightly more focused on academics (since professors are around that day there is a lunch with them and they teach mini-classes for the admits), and Saturday is slightly more focused on careers, with alumni panels and a presentation from the career office. The other main difference is in the social activities planned. Friday has TG and dinner and night out in Evanston (including live music from Kellogg's two awesome cover bands), while Saturday has a closing reception and night out in Chicago. Once you get your login info for the welcome website you can see the DAK schedule and decide which day you'd rather attend.

Jerz, others,
Now that the euphoria of getting the admits is subsiding and I plan my financing situation with my wife, I realize the lack of $$s. Both Booth and Kellogg gave admits, but neither gave any $$s. Do you think it will be too much stupidity on my part if I let Kellogg know that Booth also gave me an admit decision (or vice versa) to see if either schools can squeeze out some money for me? Please don't think I am a jerk, I am just poor.
mbasc2010,
Don't let Evanston is sub-urban influence your decision as downtown Chicago is as easily accessible from Evanston as it is from Booth (okay, just marginally less accessible).

I can't speak for Booth, but Kellogg gives out a good amount of scholarship money when you apply for financial aid, so I'd try to get that application in as soon as possible. I don't think telling Kellogg that you were also admitted to Booth would be very persuasive in getting a scholarship, since just about every student admitted to Kellogg also has offers from at least one other peer school. There was even someone else on the board who tried using a scholarship from another school to get more money from Kellogg, and the response was no. Bottom line: Kellogg is pretty generous with the scholarship money, but isn't really open to changing their decisions based on what other schools have given to applicants.

Jerz or other current students - I have questions about financial aid and the visa process. I'd love to get advice from a current student who has been through the same process. Specifically, moving from H1b to F1, green card filed, preferably Indian who knows the intricacies of the consulates, requested financial aid from Kellogg and had to take a private loan.

I know its a long list but I'm sure SOMEONE has been in this position?

If you guys know of anyone could you please put me in touch? I can PM my phone number.

For DAK attendees, what are your plans for the weekend regarding the housing hunt? I am aware that there are optional housing tours, but I was chatting with unhedged the other day, and apparently you can actually secure an apartment during DAK 2.

Maybe some current students can offer some advice for us? Is the DAK-organized housing hunt sufficient, or should we be planning our own visits? I noticed on the admitted students message board, many 2nd years are listing their places and available for viewings during the weekend. I am undecided about setting up appointments with these students, as I have very little idea about the housing market for Kellogg students. So far, I have heard there is McManus as well as 3 popular buildings off campus (I believe 1500 Chicago is one of them), but don't know what is a good deal and what isn't.

To be honest, I really don't talk to my classmates about their immigration status or how they're financing their education, so I'm not sure I could find you who you're looking for. Your best bet would be to either i) talk to someone in the financial aid office if you have specific questions, or ii) email someone from the India Business Club, who may be able to help (club contact info is on the club webpage).

@boogs - if you look at the housing info page on the welcome site, there should be an Excel document with a lot of information from current students on where they live, rent, amenities, etc. that you can use to get a sense of what's out there. The housing tours during DAK will hit on the most popular buildings with students, but I know plenty of students who found their apartment either from graduating second years or their own search. I'd recommend going on the tours, maybe contacting a few students who have posted their apartment on the discussion board and trying to get an idea of where you want to live during DAK to save the cost of coming back in the future. Also keep in mind the admits who went to DAK I have a 2 month head start on you guys, so you'll want to work something out pretty soon after DAK II. I'd say the popular buildings can start to fill up by the end of May.

Thanks Jerz! +1

One thing I noticed in the 2nd year listings is that most leases start/end July 1. Can we reasonably find places that start 8/1, or do we pretty much have to eat a month of wasted rent?

I think most of the landlords that work a lot with students have some apartments that start 7/1 and others that start 8/1. But, if your lease starts 8/1, it'll end on 7/31 so you end up eating a month of rent after you graduate. Sometimes you can negotiate on this though: I was able to sign a 2 year lease that started on 8/1 and ended on 6/30.

Also, of general interest, Kellogg announced our new dean today: Sally Blount, currently vice dean of Stern and dean of NYU's undergrad college.
