After the Second World War, the city of Cologne started the repair of the historical Cathedral, a project, taking almost a decade to finish; the Bild, the largest daily, described as the most expensive repair undertaken ever.

(A) the repair of the historical Cathedral, a project, taking almost a decade to finish; -- The second IC after the semicolon seems to have no connect with the previous part.

(B) repairing the historical Cathedral, a project that took almost a decade to finish; --- The second IC after the semicolon seems to have no connect with the previous part.

(C) repairing the historical Cathedral, a project that had taken almost a decade to finish and --- had taken is wrong . On the day of start, the project had not taken a decade

(D) the repair of the historical Cathedral, a project that took almost a decade to finish and --- suffers from lack of 'that' parallelism.

(E) the repair of the historical Cathedral, a project that took almost a decade to finish and that -- I vote for this.

Hello daagh

Why does the first and second IC have no connection ? Since they are both talking about the repair

Edited: After the Second World War, the city of Cologne started the repair of the historical Cathedral, a project, taking almost a decade to finish; the Bild, the largest daily, described it (the repair) as the most expensive repair undertaken ever.

Can you see how the pronoun turns the connection complete?

Hello,

Can you please explain the use of the repair vs repairing?

There is a big meaning issue in B. B uses a semicolon which makes a new clause starting with "The Blid". This implies that the blid itself was the largest project undertaken, which is illogical.
E on the other hand uses a project that ... and that the blid described.. Much clearer meaning and a lot more logical imo.
