I am not convinced as there is a contrast per se
How I understood the meaning is --> the original sentence says that "There are dozens of small museums that are devoted to various ethnic groups and local history. However, there are a couple out there open for exploration (which might bring out something new after exploring)"

You're right. There is definitely a contrast here:
Dozens {devoted to local history or various ethnic groups} BUT many {one-of-a-kind}

The sentence tells us that there are lots of ~similar museums, but there are also many ~unique museums. Needless to say, this leads us to option C, which is not the OA.

A. Many people would not have a problem with "either devoted to local history or various ethnic groups", but such a structure breaks parallelism. "devoted to either local history or various ethnic groups" would be better.

B. "Many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to the Bronx that are open for exploration on summer weekends" is not a complete clause as it does not contain a main verb (it is just one big noun).

C. I think this is the best option, the one we should mark.

D. And... also is redundant, and this option doesn't introduce the contrast we need.

E. "Dozens of New York’s small museums and also many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to the Bronx that are open for exploration on summer weekends" is not a complete clause as it does not contain a main verb (it is just one big noun). This option also implies that both New York’s small museums and many one-of-a-kind museums are "devoted to local history or various ethnic groups", which is not the correct meaning. And... also is redundant.

For what it's worth, I think it's an easy C. The other options (A, B, D, and E) are obviously incorrect, but... this is an official question, and C is not the OA. It'd be great to see more opinions on this.

I think the OA is correct.

When I read the question (option A), one of the things that jumped up is 'Why does this have a contrast word?'
B has the same problem, as does C.
C is trickier, because C has no grammar problem: the only problem is the BUT.

The two parts of the sentence tell us that
1) New York has small museums that are devoted to specialised stuff
2) New York has unique museums that open only on weekends
There really is no contrast! Both categories consist of quirky non-mainstream museums. The sentence as a whole tells us that New York has a variety of museums (other than the big and famous ones)

In New York there are dozens of small museums that are devoted to either local history or various ethnic groups. In addition, there are many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to Bronx that can be explored on summer weekends.

One thing we really need to pay heed is that there is no apparent contrast in this sentence. The first past of the sentence talks about the museums that are devoted to certain specific fields. The other part of the sentence is also providing some extra information. The information contained in the second part of the sentence is not contrasting information. Therefore, we do not need contrast in this sentence.



Error Analysis
1. Since there is no apparent contrast in this sentence, we do not need “Although”.
2. Either is followed by “devoted to local history” whereas or is followed by “various ethnic groups”. These two entities re not parallel.

Yes, there is no contrast.

Dozens of New York’s small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, and there are also many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to the Bronx that are open for exploration on summer weekends.

"Dozens" implies "many" too. So dozens are devoted to local history etc and there are many one-of-a-kind open for exploration on summer weekends.

Contrast would be something like: Dozens are devoted to ... but few are ...

Since there is no contrast in the information, we will not use "but". Hence, (C) is not correct.

(D) is the best option.

In option B (leaving Although part ) & Option E, wouldn't "many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to the Bronx that are open for exploration on summer weekends"
Wouldn't "are open", would act as a verb?
Specially in B- DC + comma + Museums (one-of-a-kind and manhattan to the bronx, just providing extra information of museums) + verb (are open)....

Help me to know, where I am making a mistake.

Thought process: Why do we need a contrasting comparison?
Is it justified? No. Choose D straightaway as E sounds awkward because of a missing verb.

Option Elimination -
We are sharing "many museums" (the subject of the left side) on one side and "many one-of-a-kind museums" on the other side (the word "there" serves as a placeholder or introductory element that is often used to indicate the existence or presence of something. In this context, it is used to introduce and emphasize the presence of "many one-of-a-kind museums" in the specified locations).
E.g., Many students enjoyed the science fair, and many teachers were impressed by the quality of the projects.
So, there is no contrast, but yes, using "and also" leads to redundancy. "and also" is a red herring. Yes, it's redundant, but it can be used to put more stress on something. E.g. I enjoy playing tennis, and I also love swimming.
