Logically the 2 parts have nothing in contrast, the sentence is discussing 2 types of museums in a way "there is A and also there is B"

so anything that shows a contrast is out, thus A, B and C out.

E is obviously wrong. No need to explain.

D is the best choice left.

A- eliminate- not pointed to the main idea
b- eliminate- it bcomes more awkaward without "there are"
C- Looks good... but the term "but" indicates that the following part will present something contrary... though it infact is an additional information ..
D- Solves the problem of sentence C and looks like a good choice
E- inverted construction. we have better choices.

i ll go with D

IMO D

A -
1) Lacks parallelism between either/ or;
2) Also, we dont need contrast in sentence, we need continuation. (FANBOYS)
B -
1) Needs some connecting word after comma, sounds incomplete sentence if whole sentence is read out aloud along with B option.
2) OR is used, but not sure whether "various ethnic groups" and "local history" are comparable
C - 1) we dont need contrast in sentence, we need continuation.
D - CORRECT - FANBOYS is used as continuation
E -
1) Meaning changes
2) OR is used, but not sure whether "various ethnic groups" and "local history" are comparable

(A) Although dozens of New York's small museums are either devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, there are
- Choice A lacks parallelism. Devoted to is after either hence should be repeated for the or element as well.

(B) Although dozens of New York's small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups,
- Choice B is incomplete. presence of THAT within the second sentence makes start "Many of" incomplete.

(C) Dozens of New York's small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, but there are

(E) Devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, dozens of New York's small museums and also

Hi Apoorv601,

The "although" which starts the clause refers to the subject "New York's small museums" hence the clause that follows after comma has to carry something to do with the subject.

For E.g. Although the hurricane was headed our way last night, early this morning it turned north and missed Florida completely.

Since the clasue that follows has a different subject we cant use "although". Hence both A and B are out straight away. " But " is used for contrast which is unnecessary here. So C is out.

Option E makes no sense. The second clause does not complete the first.

Hence D.

Hope this helps.

Can someone please explain the idea behind eliminating "A"?
Thanks

Hi,
the reason for eliminating A is parallelism in "either.... or ....."

Although dozens of New York’s small museums are either devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, there are
it should be either" devoted to local history or devoted to various ethnic groups,...
or "devoted to either local history or various ethnic groups...
hope it helps

Although dozens of New York’s small museums are either devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, there are many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to the Bronx that are open for exploration on summer weekends.

(A) Although dozens of New York’s small museums are either devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, there are
wrong - "Although" is for contrast and this contrast is not logical. contrasting what the museums are devoted for vs when are they open

(B) Although dozens of New York’s small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups,
wrong - "Although" is for contrast and this contrast is not logical. contrasting what the museums are devoted for vs when are they open

(C) Dozens of New York’s small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, but there are
wrong - BUT is again a contrast, and its illogically contrasting things here.

(D) Dozens of New York’s small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, and there are also
right - by eliminating 4 choices. if you still dont agree, then this correctly uses AND with 2 independent clauses which are parallel in logic talking about just the museums

(E) Devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, dozens of New York’s small museums and also
wrong: sentence fragment - before AND we dont have an independent clause

Although dozens of New York's small museums are either devoted to local history or the heritages of various ethnic groups, there are many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to the Bronx that are open for exploration on summer weekends.

i have given my reasoning for each. its a 2-3 split. i went with elimination strategy.

H there,

Although dozens of New York’s small museums are either devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, there are many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to the Bronx that are open for exploration on summer weekends.

In New York there are dozens of small museums that are devoted to either local history or various ethnic groups. In addition, there are many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to Bronx that can be explored on summer weekends.

One thing we really need to pay heed is that there is no apparent contrast in this sentence. The first past of the sentence talks about the museums that are devoted to certain specific fields. The other part of the sentence is also providing some extra information. The information contained in the second part of the sentence is not contrasting information. Therefore, we do not need contrast in this sentence.

Error Analysis

1. Since there is no apparent contrast in this sentence, we do not need “Although”.
2. Either is followed by “devoted to local history” whereas or is followed by “various ethnic groups”. These two entities re not parallel.

POE:

Choice A: Although dozens of New York’s small museums are either devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, there are: Incorrect for the reasons stated above.

Choice B:
Although dozens of New York’s small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups,: Incorrect.
1. “Although” is not needed.
2. There is no main verb in the sentence. This leads to a fragment.

Choice C: Dozens of New York’s small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, but there are: Incorrect. “but” brings in the unnecessary contrast in the sentence. We do not need the contrast.

Choice D: Dozens of New York’s small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, and there are also: Correct.

Choice E: Devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, dozens of New York’s small museums and also: Incorrect. There is no main verb in the sentence. This leads to fragment.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Hello,

I understand most of the explanation you provided except for option B. You mentioned "There is no main verb in the sentence. This leads to a fragment." Clearly option E does not have a main verb but option B has are devoted. Is that not a verb ? What is the role of are devoted in option B if it is not the verb?

GMAT community clearly needs GMATNinja 's help with this one,

I've not seen any reasonable explanation of why option C is rejected apart from the use of "but", which is, to be fair, perfectly fine here.
The original sentence uses contrast so one can reasonably think that contrast is needed in general

Hello,

I understand most of the explanation you provided except for option B. You mentioned "There is no main verb in the sentence. This leads to a fragment." Clearly option E does not have a main verb but option B has are devoted. Is that not a verb ? What is the role of are devoted in option B if it is not the verb?
the portion 'are devoted' is to use as a verb of the subject 'that'. here the main verb of main subject 'many' is missing. so, there is fragment error.

I am not convinced as there is a contrast per se
How I understood the meaning is --> the original sentence says that "There are dozens of small museums that are devoted to various ethnic groups and local history. However, there are a couple out there open for exploration (which might bring out something new after exploring)"
