IMO C.

First clause started with 'Although' so this is a dependent clause. The next clause must be an independent clause, and it should start with subject + verb (coyotes are ) .. So C fits ...

OK .. I think that sentence meaning is wrong and idiom is also wrong (depicted as) ... I didnt even read the entire sentence ...

How about A? followed correct idiom and an independent clause..

So is "depicted as" always incorrect? Is this sentence incorrect:

The artist depicted himself as a much younger man than he really was.

- this is correct
B. in films about the American West coyotes are depicted to be solitary animals that howl mournfully on the tops of distant hills
- "in films" is wrong
C. coyotes are depicted as solitary animals howling mournfully on the tops of distant hills in films about the American West
- no parallelism
D. films about the American West depict coyotes as if they were solitary, mournfully howling animals on the tops of distant hills
- "as if they were"
E. films about the American West depict coyotes to be solitary and mournfully howling animals on the tops of distant hills
- "to be solitary"

Answer is A. Initially thought it was C but then A is correct.
