This is a good question. It is not testing only Subject verb agreement.
If you are eliminating A because of 'are' then you are wrong. The usage of 'are' is completely correct in A. There are 2 subjects in A combined with 'and' - series of shapes and a long insect line line combined with 'and' . So it needs a plural verb 'are' . B uses 'is' as the verb and therefore it is out.
D also uses 'is' , but most of the people who eliminated D did not notice that 'and' is replaced by 'as well as' in D. As well as additive does not add to the subject, so in this case the verb should be singular i.e. 'Is' . So Let's keep D for now.
C uses 'are' but introduces new error by replacing 'and' with 'as well as' . For that reason C is out.
A and E use correct verbs but they have a different problem. In A the usage of that of the bachelors' is totally incorrect. It basically mean "that of a bachelors' domain". What does that refer to? For this reason A is out.
E has a similar problem. It says between bride's domain and bachelors. This would have been correct if it said bride's domain and bachelors' domain. For that reason E is out.
Hence, D is our answer.
If you only use vertical scanning, you will eliminate D because of "is" and select C. So make sure you review the entire sentence before selecting the answer.
Kudos if this helped you.
