Due to Outbreak of COVID-19 and Increased competition for candidates applying to MBA deferral programs such as HBS 2+2 or GSB 2+2, My Questions are :
1) What Changes can candidates make in this time to improve their profile and stand out from other candidates as internships are being cancelled and most internships done by candidates in this time frame are WFH which provides less networking and a personal recommendation letter since whatever is taught is taught over Video calls in bulk in no manner unique to any candidate?
2)On what basis will the candidates profile be evaluated those who are applying to next year of MBA deferral programs given that there is no work experience?
Hey Deeptanshu02,
Thanks for the post! I do think it's important to keep the perspective that a lot of the things happening in the employment market are out of your control. So as you say, most of the competition will have done virtual internships. That's just one part of the application - you've still got 4 years of undergrad under your belt, so your leadership during school and academic prowess will still be important. During the virtual internship, ask a lot of questions and really try and stand out from the pack. Ask for extra work when you can, and engage yourself fully with your assignments. Schools will understand it is difficult to stand out based on a 2-4 week virtual internship, but really try and make yourself know to your managers and make an effort to reach out and get to (virtually) know them!
During this time, I'd also recommend spending more time on the GMAT, as that's one of the best ways to differentiate yourself from the pack if internship experiences all meld together. Even a difference of 20 points can be huge. And don't forget about your essays...these will hold a greater importance during the upcoming cycle as schools try and determine how well you understand yourself and your near-term aspirations.
