Journalistic ethics demand that reporters protect the identities of individuals who speak to them on condition that they not be named.

(A) that they not be named
subjunctive usage in the form of be + verb is correct, and coveys the meaning appropriately

(B) that their names will not be used
'names will not be used' is wordy compared to 'not be named'; also, not in line with subjunctive mood in the non-underlined portion

(C) that their names are not used
here also, the usage 'names are not be used' is wordy compared to 'not be named'; also, not in line with subjunctive mood in the non-underlined portion

(D) of not being named
incorrect grammatical structure to convey the subjunctive mood

(E) they will not be named
use of 'will' not in line with the subjunctive mood depicted by the sentence

(A) is the CORRECT answer

Journalistic ethics demand that reporters protect the identities of individuals who speak to them on condition that they not be named.

In non-underlined part, "them" is referring back to reporters(logically) and in the underlined part, "they" & "their" may refer back to reporters or individuals. Logically it should refer to individuals but we already have "them" referring back to journalists. Hence, usage of pronouns is creating ambiguity.

(A) that they not be named- Pronoun ambiguity.
(B) that their names will not be used- Pronoun ambiguity.
(C) that their names are not used- Pronoun ambiguity.
(D) of not being named- Left with this option.
(E) they will not be named- Pronoun ambiguity.

IMO OA should be D.

In the un-underlined part of the question, "on condition" is a trigger for the subjunctive mood. Firstly, "on condition" requires that "that" be in the sentence, which choices (D) and (E) don't and for that reason can be eliminated. Secondly, the subjunctive mood requires that the verb be in its base form, which the verbs in choices (B) and (C) do not, while (A) does.

The only choice which is fully in the correct subjunctive form is (A).

ANSWER A

(A) This is the correct answer. Use of "to be" is correct in these types of uncertain conditional statement.

(B) Use of "will" in a "if" condition, usually "to be" is used. Here there is no certainty of such situation and hence these individuals are putting a condition that it should not happen.

(C) "are not used" is also similarly wrongly used in this sentence. "are" will not be used in uncertain conditions.

(D) Use of "being" is wrong here. This is a uncertain condition, where the individuals don't want there names associated ever. This sentence only conveys their condition to be in the present. Hence wrong option.

(E) This has similar error as explained in sentence (B). Hence wrong option.

A - (1) that - is required because we are mentioning a condition, (2) they - pronoun correctly refers to individuals, (3) be - verb correctly used because "condition that" creates an imperative structure where infinitive verb must be used. ✅

B - will - not a correct tense for imperative structure

C - are - not a correct tense for imperative structure

D - "on condition of" must be followed by a noun, not a correct structure

E - will - not a correct tense for imperative structure

Therefore, option A is the correct answer.

"condition that " is a subjunctive mode. it requires base form of the verb. We can easily eliminate B,C and E.
Between A and D, A is concise.

The correct option is:

(A) that they not be named

This option accurately conveys the condition set by the individuals who speak to reporters. The phrase "that they not be named" indicates that these individuals do not want their identities disclosed. It adheres to the journalistic ethics of protecting the anonymity of sources. The use of the subjunctive form "not be named" emphasizes the conditionality of the request.

A. Correct
B.used , changes the meaning
C. Same as B
D. We need that
E .Same as D

Ans .A

(A) that they not be named
The intended meaning of the sentence is clear. Let's keep this.
(B) that their names will not be used
"will" should not be used when subjunctive mood is there. Plus the meaning is distorted. Eliminate this.
(C) that their names are not used
"are" should not be used when subjunctive mood is there. Plus the meaning is distorted. Eliminate this.
(D) of not being named
"that" should come after "condition". Plus the meaning of the sentence is awkward. Eliminate this.
(E) they will not be named
"that" should come after "condition". Eliminate this.

The answer is option A.
