The difference in critical accolades afforded to genres of fiction that are predominantly male-focused over the predominantly female-focused have been a topic of extensive discussion, for quite some time, in the field of Gender Studies.

Split:- has/have
Subject is The difference is singular, hence "has" is correct. Eliminating A,B,C
Between D and E
D has more clear and intended meaning.

A, B, and C are wrong because the singular subject "The difference..." does not agree in number with the plural verb "have."
E is wrong because the relative pronoun "that" replaces the plural noun "accolades", and it does not agree in number with the singular verb "favors."

difference...have - S-V error

same as A
(C) that favors predominantly male-focused genres of fiction over the predominantly female-focused have
same as A
(D) afforded to predominantly male-focused genres of fiction over the predominantly female-focused has
Correct! A over B - A and B both are phrases and the meaning is clear
(E) that favors predominantly male-focused genres of fiction over those that are predominantly female-focused has
Changes the meaning - this option says that the "difference" favors "predominantly male-focused...". However, the original sentence means that the "critical accolades" that are afforded/favored

(D) afforded to predominantly male-focused genres of fiction over the predominantly female-focused has
- here (genres of fiction) is omitted but understood are that’s what “predominantly female-focused” is referring to because of its parallel structure induced by “over”

- “those” here incorrectly refers to “predominantly male-focused genre” as a whole

Re: Around the World in 80 Questions (Day 4): The difference in critical [#permalink]
"a topic of extensive discussion" refers to the "the difference in critical accolades", "the difference" is singular.

(A) This sentence reads:- "The diference ..... have been ...." which is wrong, it should be "has been" instead. Also the sentence wrongfully compares "accolades afforded to genres of fiction that are predominantly male-focused" with "accolades
afforded to the predominantly female-focused", which is also wrong, the sentence should have "those that are predominantly female-focused" instead.

(B) This sentence reads:- "The diference ..... have been ...." which is wrong, it should be "has been" instead.

(C) This sentence reads:- "The diference ..... have been ...." which is wrong, it should be "has been" instead. Also similar to sentence (A), there is wrong comparison between:- "accolades that favors predominantly male-focused genres of fiction" with "accolades that favors predominantly female-focused".

(D) This sentence correctly uses "has been" for singular noun "the difference". But it makes mistake similar to sentence (C), there is wrong comparison between:- "accolades that favors predominantly male-focused genres of fiction" with "accolades that favors predominantly female-focused".

(E) This sentence correctly uses "has been" for singular noun "the difference". And the comparison between "accolades that favors predominantly male-focused genres of fiction" with " accolades that favors those that are predominantly female-focused" is correct. Here "those" refers to "genres of fiction" mentioned in earlier sentence. Hence this is the correct option.

IMO

Options A,B,C are incorrect with the deterministic error - has/have
Talking about -----> difference of something - is Singular

Thus option A,B & C are eliminated as they use - Have

B/W option D & E ---> E is wordy and awkward

plus the word over is a parallelism marker hence, the construction before and after it should be parallel.

Hence, my choice is option D

Hope it helps!

Let us destroy it,

A) lacks the requisite parallelism by failing to provide the suitable word to refer back to the mentioned genres
B) i think, it has those word which refer back, all are used correctly, leave in
C) and D) have the same mistake ,cross out
E)The term "favors" changes the meaning of the sentence and makes it less accurate in conveying the intended comparison of critical praise.
