As per the results of a recent study conducted by Ultrasight , a market research firm, the recall value is double for advertisements seen or heard three times than those viewed fewer times.

A) than those viewed fewer times
B) than for those viewed fewer times
C) than what it is for those viewed fewer times
D) than it is for those viewed fewer times
E) than viewed fewer times

The answer seems to be clearly B.

Here we are comparing recall value of advertisements seen or heard three times vs recall value of advertisements viewed fewer times and to depict this we are using the construction 'A' is double for 'X' than for 'Y'.

Hence X and Y need to be parallel in this.
So X => for advertisements seen or heard three times
and Y can be => for those viewed fewer times. where those is used in place of plural 'advertisements'.

The only option giving this is B.

Those is clearly referring to advertisements. It can't refer to anything else. So, it's only logical that it refers recall value. In that case, D would be right.

Can anyone please clear this confusion?

can anyone explain what is wrong with D ? I thought that "it" does not have ambiguity here since "it" singular can only refer to recall value here and not advertisements.

Pranjal3107

Here the comparison between
the recall value is double for advertisements seen or heard three times than for those (advertisements) viewed fewer times
and not
the recall value is double for advertisements seen or heard three times than it (the recall value) is for those (advertisements) viewed fewer times

The differance is the recall vaule is common for parallelism.

I hope that this may clear some of your doubts

ramlala is correct.
Its just that B is shortest best way to express the intended meaning of the sentence.

The recall value is double for advertisements seen or heard three times than those viewed fewer times.

Now "than" is a comparative indicator

Look at the clause/phrase RHS of the comparative indicator. Now compare it with the LHS clause/phrase

LHS: those (advertisements) viewed fewer times. Note here viewed fewer times is modifying the advertisements.
RHS: The recall value is double for advertisements seen or heard three times. Here seen or heard three times is modifying the advertisements.

Comparison part: The recall value is double for advertisements X than advertisements Y
When you compare LHS and RHS, you see that on RHS side, for is missing.
The recall value is double for advertisements X than for advertisements Y.

Therefore, B is preferred over other options.

ExpertsGlobal5,

Hello krndatta,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, in the "more A than B" idiomatic construction, and in others along the same line, A and B must be parallel.

Option B maintains this parallelism between "for advertisements seen or heard three times" and "for those viewed fewer times".

Thus, B is the correct answer choice.

We hope this helps.
All the best!

KarishmaB Ma'am,

Option D fails to maintain parallelism.
"Double than" is the comparison operator. After Double we have a prepositional phrase and after than we have an independent clause. Hence, incorrect.
Is there any meaning issue in option D?
