what am I missing here:

I assume i am setting up the following formula incorrectly but cant see where my mistake lies...

9.85=1+0.15(m/5-1/5)
where m is the number of miles

8.85/0.15=m/5-1/5

59=m/5-1/5

295=m-1

m=294???

.15(m/5) doesn't make sense. That implies that the charge was .15 for every 5 miles.

You should have used .15(m/(1/5)).

Then., when you cross multiplied, you would have had 59 * 1/5 = m - 1/5 -> 60/5 = m -> 12 = m.

At the end of a taxi ride, Frank paid a fare of $9.85, not including a tip. If the taxi fare was $1.00 for the first 1/5 mile and $0.15 for each 1/5 mile thereafter, and there were not other charges, how many miles was Frank's taxi ride?

A. 9.8
B. 10
C. 11.8
D. 12
E. 13.1
Lets assume, the total distance travelled is x+1 1/5 miles in total

9.85 = 1 + 0.15 * x
x= 59
The total distance covered is 60 1/5 miles or 12 miles

Charging Rule: $1.00 for the first 1/5 mile and $0.15 for each 1/5 mile thereafter,

i.e. if he rode x parts of 1/5th miles, His cost = 1 + 0.15*(x-1) = 9.85

i.e. 0.15*(x-1) = 8.85

i.e. (x-1) = 59
i.e. x = 60

Total Miles = 60/5 = 12 miles

For me the best way to solve this one is the following.

Let x be the number of miles asked.

As 0,15 correspond to the fare for each 1/5 mile thereafter after the first 1/5 mile --> 5*0,15 = 0,75 correspond to the fare of a mile thereafter. So the final equation is --> 9,85 = 1 + 0,75(x-1/5) . Then x = 12

Responding to a pm:

Keep the $1 aside and 1/5 mile aside.
$8.85 was paid for other 1/5th mile parts.
How many 1/5th miles were there? 8.85/0.15 = 59 parts.

Hence, he paid for a total of 60 parts of 1/5 miles each. This means he travelled for 60 * 1/5 = 12 miles.
