I've already been accepted by three MBA programs, and one with a significant merit scholarship. What is the best way to request a deferral (and retain the scholarship)?
This is tricky- and the best approach is to take a personal approach in my opinion. I would request a meeting with the director admissions- see if you can get him/her to commit to 15 minutes with you. Then you GO there... have a face to face conversation where you say HOW MUCH you want to attend, explain the work situation... and ask for his/her help in how to approach this situation. If the school really wants you- and you are humble and not asking for the deferral directly- but rather- here is my situation... what do you suggest I do- what options are there.... I think that is the best possible path to success. If you catch a busy adcom director on email it is too easy to fire off the "no" but if you look them in the eyes and explain your "situation" it is harder for them to dismiss it. In any case- that's my two cents... and Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
The reason is that my company is going through a big transition this year, possibly could make an exit and I have a little equity. If we sold the business, I would probably be on the transition team so I think it would be a great experience that would add value to the classroom if I got to defer a year and x,y,z all happened. However, there's no guarantee that we will be able to sell so there's some risk. Is this a good enough reason for schools to consider my deferment request? Is it possible that the school would get very annoyed by my request? And is it more strategic to request this before or after I have paid down a deposit?

PS: I would be willing to double my deposit for a deferral.

@youngh00n-- yes-- just curious-- share what happened and maybe this can help others going through this now. I think right now MBA programs likely don't want to allow deferral except for visa issues or a health crisis. But who knows! The rules are all being broken right now. But do share if you see this so we can see what happened!
