A

'substances' is plural, tells (B,D) - is not correct in this context
C and E are redundantand aren't parralel

C for me.
In this case," one of the substances" is singular, therefore, should be "tells". A,B and E are out.
Remain C and D. D is akward for me,thus C is the winner.

Hi guys,

IMO D

(A) tell individual genes both when to become active and when to remain one of the substances is singular
(B) tell individual genes both at which time they should become active and should remain one of the substances is singular
(C) tells individual genes both when to become active and when to remain it could be, but for me to remain quiescent is redudant
(D) tells individual genes both when to activate and when to Hold
(E) tell an individual gene both about when it should become active and when it should one of the substances is singular
remain
