Lets prove this using numbers
Let us assume number of Calls:
Writewell = 100 (4 x 25)
Express = 25

Now let us assume number of customers:
Writewell = 50
Express = 3 x 50 = 150

Now calls/customer
Writewell = 2(100/50)
Express = (25/150) = (1/6)

Since the number of call per customers is greater for writewell, we can clearly conclude that writewell's word-processing software is more difficult

Must be (B), if even after having three times the number word-processing software customers that Writewell is receiving four times as many calls as the Express hot line, then it clearly indicates that Writewell’s word-processing software must be more difficult to use than Express’s.

Both Writewell and Express provide round-the-clock telephone assistance to any customer who uses their word-processing software. Since customers only call the hot lines when they find the software difficult to use, and the Writewell hot line receives four times as many calls as the Express hot line, Writewell’s word-processing software must be more difficult to use than Express’s.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument above?

(A) Calls to the Express hot line are almost twice as long, on average, as are calls to the Writewell hot line.

(B) Express has three times the number word-processing software customers that Writewell has.

(C) Express receives twice as many letters of complaint about its word-processing software as Writewell receives about its word-processing software.

(D) The number of calls received by each of the two hot lines has been gradually increasing.

(E) The Writewell hot-line number is more widely publicized that the Express hot-line number.

A- Even if the calls to Express hot line are lengthier than those to Writewell, the number of calls to writewell are far more in number. So it does not strengthen/weaken the argument it just gives additional information.
B- it states that the number of customers of Express is higher than that of Writewell; this shows that express is more acceptable/preferable to customers than Writewell. Hence, gives a reason to think that Express is superior to Writewell. Therefore, B seems to be the required strengthener.
C- weakens
D-Irrelevant
E-Doesn't strengthen/weaken the argument.

Yes and why do they prefer ? it's easy and not difficult and this thinking helps us in clarifying that B indeed is a strengthener

The argument is that Writewell's software must be more difficult to use since WW receives 4x as many calls as Express.

What strengthens this?

A would weaken the claim. If calls were 2x as long then perhaps Express would receive as many calls as WW if the calls weren't as long.
B is correct E receives significantly fewer complaints as a proportion of the overall customer base:

WW customers: 100
WW complaints: 100
Express customers: 300
Express complaints: 25

C is incorrect as it weakens the claim (if anything)
D is incorrect as it states an argument against the claim
E - I incorrectly chose E without thinking. Thinking about it, this would serve to weaken the claim since perhaps more customers would phone express up if they publicized their number more.

So When I read this argument I eliminated all choices at one go thinking that all are irrelevant.
Then at the second time,

(A) - The duration of the call isnt really our concern.

(B) Express has three times the number word-processing software customers that Writewell has. -
Say,
Customers of WW = 5
Calls of WW = 4
Customers of Express = 15
Calls of Express = 1
This choice basically says that even if the customers of Writewell were less, they still received more calls than Express leading us to believe that there's something seriously wrong with the software. :D

(C) - Weakens. Complaints are more against Express, then maybe Express is difficult to use.

(D) - increasing calls at both hotlines is irrelevant.

(E) - publicity is irrelevant

Ans: B
GmatDaddy
Argument: (BG info) Both Writewell and Express provide round-the-clock telephone assistance to any customer who uses their word-processing software.
Premise: (1) Since customers only call the hot lines when they find the software difficult to use, and (2) the Writewell hot line receives four times as many calls as the Express hot line, (conclusion) Writewell’s word-processing software must be more difficult to use than Express’s.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument above?
means what can I add to make the conclusion strong? difficulty in use = W's Soft > E's
(A) Calls to the Express hot line are almost twice as long, on average, as are calls to the Writewell hot line.
(If anything this actually weakens the argument) IF call to E's are twice as long and customer only calls for the issue in using the software, then we can think (a bit) that longer calls means customers are not able to easily understand how to use the software even when they are on the call and someone is explaining them how to use it. So this actually (may) shows that E's > Ws

(B) Express has three times the number word-processing software customers that Writewell has.
(This strengthen the argument) E has 3 times more customer then Ws and still W has higher calls. even with 3:1 ratio of customer W is gettting more calls then there must be something wrong and the only thing, as per the argument, can be wrong for getting the calls is the difficuty in use of the software. so W's > E's Correct ans

(C) Express receives twice as many letters of complaint about its word-processing software as Writewell receives about its word-processing software. (Although the argument doesn't talk about the letter but anything this also weakens the argument by showing that E's > W's)

(D) The number of calls received by each of the two hot lines has been gradually increasing.
(Gradually increasing is not enough to show which one is difficult to use ??)

(E) The Writewell hot-line number is more widely publicized that the Express hot-line number.
(WE are not concerned about all the population or how many people have the number because we can say that if I am the customer of any specific software, the chances are almost 100% that I will have the customer care's number for my use, so not relevent to us)
