Option B is incorrect because COMMA + PARTICIPLE (comma + ___ING, or comma + verbING), called a
participial phrase,
modifies
the entire previous clause.Present participial modifiers preceded by a comma and placed at the end of a sentence often
give additional information (as if in afterthought) or present the effect or result of the previous clause.
(Those two purposes are not the only two.)
Correct: Hurricane-force winds tore through the city, destroying all the skyscrapers.
The participial phrase is a result of the clause that precedes it.
In option (B) "hiring land . . . " cannot modify "so he started traveling south."
To attempt such a modification produces nonsense.
