This is my guess how this interview initiating process works: people with an interview request within 1 week of the "under review" status are the ones who highly impressed their 1st reader at columbia and that reader decided to initiate the interview process..for people where it took 2+ weeks to get the interview invite are cases where the 1st reader was not convinced so the app had to go to the 2nd reader to initiate the interview...and for cases where the 2nd reader is not convinced, then its the sad ding...i would think if its 5-6 weeks mark then one can fear the worst
Your point makes sense. However, I would make a difference between an US applicant and a non US applicant. To assess the second one, they have to find an interviewer and organize the interview. Also, I think there are a selection among the international applicants in order to keep a high diversity. So for example they will never accept 40 persons coming from a same country (ex: from Spain)... There is thus (pure guessing) also a selection among the nationalities... don't you think?
I don't know if the difference between US/non-US applicant is that large. While I am American, I am currently living in a relatively remote location is Asia (hence my clever name) and was chosen for an interview (which I had to do abroad). The school did not help set up my interview more than they did anyone else's. Meaning - I had the same link mailed to me, I had to do the same search for available alumni, and I had to personally email the people on the list to set up an appointment. CBS has a surprisingly large alumni base around the world, so it is surprisingly easy to find someone to meet with. Since I was able to find someone in my current country, I do not know what the process is for talking to a current student (the backup plan if there is no ambassador in your current country/city).
I do think that more thought has to go into an international applicant, especially if they have never worked or visited NYC (or visited the CBS campus), because they have to ask themselves if this person can handle being in NYC for the next 2 years. Unlike undergrad, you can't just transfer to another school if you end up not liking it.
