It may be hard to accept but the date of interview doesn’t have any effect. We tend to form lot of biases as it is easier than accepting a decision
I was interviewed may be in the 2-3 days after submitting my application very soon in the cycle that too in early round. Still I received a WL. People who interviewed much later received an admit. So the reason is beyond the timing of the interview in a particular round

and it vrry much depends on whom against u hv been waitlisted....an applivant with xyz industry is likely to waitlisted against more or less same profile...else there will be no diversity
