I'm more leaning towards discussing the achievements to show my progress and how I changed the jobs to get closer to my goals. Is this a fatal action? Anyone else has any take on this?

If I do discuss the past achievements, is 200 words (out of total 750 words) on this too much?

I didn't write about my past achievements at all in essay 1. I specifically answered the question (career goals and why CBS).

No need to do a resume dump when they've already got it, right?

I talked about my career progress briefly so that they could see where i was coming from. Maybe try to explain the motivation why you did what you did so that admissions understand your career decisions.

I mentioned past accomplishments only to show why my career goals are what they are. I think I used only about 100 words.

In essay 2 for columbia, it says personal - do you still mention career goals and such - professional things?

I only mentioned professional things in the context of being personal. I.e., I talked about community service (which I have a lot of), and mentioned that I was a site lead every year at my company's day of service. I did not mention anything strictly professional, as I felt the prompt explicitly states not to

About the optional essay for CBS: I've heard in various occasions that people write the CBS optional essay beyond just explaining weakness part of the application (e.g. low GPA, GMAT, work gap, etc). They use it to explain positive side of their profile as well to the extent that it's important and not yet covered by the 2 essay questions (and resume/application form, etc).

I'm sure the CBS' official position is not to use this optional essay to write another essay. But would some of you please shed some light on what's the best balanced approach to use this optional essay?

Many thanks!

I think the purpose of Essay 2 is to supplement your application by either adding additional info that can tie together some seemingly disparate parts or providing explanations for some loose ends you may need to tie.

Using the optional essay is totally up to you. One of my friends who is in at CBS submitted an additional essay, that further stressed why he might be a good fit to Columbia (he was an international student), for that optional essay. But he had a 770 gmat and insane extracurriculars. So I can't really say if it helped or not. If you have the time and you really feel like adcom isn't getting the whole picture, then go ahead and submit an extra essay, I think they will read it. I personally just submitted my application and felt like essay 2 allowed me to show that "other" side of me so I didn't use that optional essay space.

Oh and about mentioning past work experience, I wrote about 180 words on that. I think its important to mention, but thats just me.

Thanks globalcitizen! It totally makes sense. I'm likely going to write an optional essay to discuss a very unique career choice situation. Hope it will work out.

About past work experience, I wrote about 200 words too and tied them to the career goals.

Best of luck!

hey guys, i know that this has prob been covered somewhere else on this forum, but with over 100pgs to go thru, i couldn't find it. I had my interview on Nov 6th, and my interviewer still has not submitted my report to the school. I emailed adcom about a week after the interview, asking if I should follow up, but they said that they would take care of it and make sure it was submitted in a timely manner. I understand that last week was prob hectic, but should I reach out to the interviewer just to check in??

Not sure what you guys think, but adcom have been a bit quiet recently.

Wonder if there will be a flurry of admits / dings in the next few days.....

Good luck all!

It is Nov 29th. I applied early Oct 6th. Last year I applied early, got an interview, placed in round 1 and then rejected. I have not heard anything back yet. Has any other ED applicants still have "Your application is under review" status? Should I contact the school?

I did an optional essay where I just accented my value to CBS. Dunno if it had an affect on my app, but I did get an interview invite (still have to do the interview).

Really, all the optional essay says is "Got anymore stuff you wanna share?"
