I am an international student very interested in applying to Columbia and am considering ED. But given the loan situation (no loan without a US cosignor and I wont have one), I want to see if any of the international students are applying ED ? I am looking at some financing options, but not sure if they would pan out.

If I apply ED and am accepted, will there be any wiggle room to back out of the committment to Columbia if I couldn't manage to arrange the funds ? How have international students in general approached Columbia for the last two years, wrt financing ? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I believe that by applying ED, you are saying your commitment to enroll already factors in the financial considerations (ie. You have secured funding).

Martinezt, I don't think there's going to be any legal drawbacks if you do rescind your offer should you be offered admission. However, I don't think you'll have to pay that $6,000 if you haven't paid; if you have, that's definitely gone. Also, keep in mind that CBS is in connection with most of the other top schools and there may be other potential downsides when it comes to applying to those of other top b-schools in the nation.

I'm just going to post Alex's (from MBA Apply) excellent response to a similar question:

Alex's Answer

It looks like you'd have to pay the $6000 regardless.

how would they make you pay $6000 if you haven't yet paid it? You get two weeks post-decision to transfer the money; I do'nt think they have the right to just take $6000 out of your credit card that you used to submit your application.

I would re-enforce this point. MBA AdComs is a pretty close-knit community - if you step on someone's foot at one school, you should expect a knock-on effect in another.

just fyi - I'm definitely not for the idea of applying but rescind the offer on ED. I believe that by applying ED, you are really committed to the school and will attend. If not, it kind of sucks for the person who didn't get in because you took his/her initial spot. The idea is not about the $6000, per se, but the mere fact that you may face some serious indirect damage to other top schools simply because you couldn't uphold the very ethics that CBS upholds.

You're right bakfed. I misread the question. I thought it was asking do I have to pay the deposit after acceptance (even if I withdraw). But it was really asking, how can they make me pay the deposit if I withdraw.

ETA: As for the original question, that is a good question for the AdCom. I would ask them now (before a decision is made) what the consequences are for failing to secure the funds for the deposit rather than after acceptance when it would look more suspect.

StevenFaulkner: Alex's answer sounds logically right. I don't think CBS will call up H/W/S/etc. and say "somebody broke the ED rule !!" and expect some sort of retaliation. BUT regardless, it's about keeping promise and living up to your words. ED rule should be followed, I believe. :P

Lawgonebusiness: Yeah. I am curious too. Not much on the BW forum but some fun posts regarding app consultants - some consultants are praising themselves with phony ID, etc. As far as GC goes, hazay got one. 3 week turnaround sounds fast though given data from last year's forum. Where does hazay live? or location doesn't matter on invites?

yes, I was wondering the same. Where does hazay live? In the States, it seems almost unlikely to get someone to interview in July and August. It IS dead.

my consultant has a good writeup of CBS interview stuff on his blog: https://adam-markus.blogspot.com/2009/10 ... lumni.html
good luck and if you could post details of the interview when you're done (please), we'd all really appreciate it :-D
Very hepful,thank you.
The interview was very interesting. Mostly focused on my resume as I anticipated. 90 minutes long.
I am now waiting for the ITW report to be sent to CBS (should receive an update of my status when it s done I think), quite a painful step as well during the application.
