It's not saying "I want to become a VP of such and such company" will get you through the door. My essays never had that. Rather, they explained my trajectory, why it made sense and why it was reasonable.

My trajectory:
Worked at a bulge in S&T, realized that I wanted to learn more about a company quantitatively and qualitatively and I wanted to help create solutions to complex problems. So I moved to consulting.

In consulting, I worked on a great number of M&A and HR related issues and worked with large companies across a broad range of industries. Consulting doesn't really add significant value besides acting as a third party advisory. So, I wanted to be in a position where I could have more skin in the game and - like consulting - develop a broad set of skills. So a start-up was the next best move.

And, in light of the healthcare reform, thought healthcare was going through a number of problems, and considering my consulting background, it was a perfect fit. So, moved to a healthcare start-up.

At the healthcare start-up, developed a passion for healthcare because it's such a unique industry and am shocked to see how inefficient it is. At the same time, we closed with Goldman becoming a portfolio company. Wanting to remain in healthcare, and wanting to be in a position where my investments can help start-ups like my employer grow structurally and financially to add value, I want to move to healthcare PE, which is why CBS is a good fit. With PE, an MBA is necessary so that's why it made sense for me.

That was very long-winded. I hope that helps.

Great post!

I'm still concerned about people who were deferred rather than rejected or accepted in Early Decision. I assumed that people were deferred because Early Decision faced record number of applicants, but with the recent string of admits (congrats to them!), I'm curious and wary on the rationale behind the deferrals. Thoughts anyone?

perhaps the biggest reason is they'll defer applicants - who I'm sure are quite competitive - to see what the rest of the pool looks like. For instance, if you're a banker, and you've got an otherwise strong profile, you can be deferred because they may want to put your app on hold and wait and see what else comes in through the door. If you're one of the strongest bankers, you're in. If you're not, then bad news.

it's a way for CBS to manage its diversity.

I look at that with a bit of skepticism. For one, the b-schools know what types of candidates do and don't make their program -- I seriously doubt it changes too dramatically from year to year. Two, they're pretty early in the process already and I don't think 2-3 more months is going to suddenly be a game changer.

I'm not totally sure why they defer -- my cynical guess is that its someone who typically would be waitlist-bound to whom they still want to reserve the right to clamp on the ED requirements.

Actually those who were deferred were released of their Early Decision requirements. There was a poster back that mentioned that one was deferred with a different timeline (December rather than February), but I'm assuming that was a J-term applicant. So I doubt that the binding ED requirements would be a factor in their decisions to defer.

CBS wants me to have another interview...by phone. Geeezzzz. I don't think my interviewer had enough in his report. He didn't take notes and the interview was 30 min. They didn't call it an interview, but its not optional. So, here we go again. Anyone have to go through this too????

It's no big deal. They just want some extra information. Some of the applicants who are interviewed are guys that they are going to ding unless by some gleam of hope they are amazing at the interview. You're not in this bucket since they want to interview you again. It's just to clarify a few points. Just know your application and know why CBS, and why you. Research things that are unique to CBS and you're golden. Ideas: Master Classes; Follies; Rugby team; value investing, entrepreneurship and healthcare focii....

RD apps under review

Did your application go under review?

I did not receive an email from Columbia but I checked my status and it now says Under Review for RD

Applied in RD earlier this week. Still shows the message that "[My] application is now being printed and prepared for review."

Oh well, I don't plan on hearing any decisions from Columbia until January at the earliest, so I'm going to go work on other apps in the meantime and try not worry about it.

Is anyone still on the waitlist for J-Term, or has been accepted recently to it? It starts in less than a month, but wondering if they are still accepting/reviewing applicants and taking people off of the waitlist for it.

long time lurker, add me to the list of ED applicants. Had my interview on Thurs, 12/2 and waiting to hear. Is the consensus that admits are hearing back within days of their interview?

Also, I got curious and noticed the Facebook group "Columbia Business School Class of 2010" already has 46 members, for whatever that's worth.

Mine went complete on 23 oct because of TOEFL issue. There has been no action thereafter. I am hopeful they will reply in couple of weeks.
