ED applicant and got the notice that i was deferred today, majorly disappointed. Does this mean I am released from the requirements of ED if I get into another school? Columbia is still my first choice but hopefully I will get in somewhere else between now and February. In that case, what would my options be?

Yes, you are released from the ED committment.

I'm confused. I certainly have no reason to doubt what other people are saying regarding deferred applicants being "released" from their early decision commitment. That being said, how are people coming to this conclusion? Did someone specifically call up or ask a member of the admissions committee this question? The reason why I'm confused is because when I read the deferral letter (portion of which is pasted below), it seems like their is no "release" of commitment per se. The letter reads verbatim: "Our intention is to have all early decisions finalized by February 1, 2011..." Also the email that one sends to adcom has a subject line that reads "Early Decision - reconsider later." I wish this deferral process had more clarity around it.

After careful review and consideration by the Admissions Committee, we are unable to offer you admission at this time. However, we recognize the strengths of your application and would like to defer our final decision until later in the application cycle. Our intention is to have all early decisions finalized by February 1, 2011, but it may be communicated at any time during the application cycle.

In order to remain an active candidate for August 2011, please send an email message to xxxxx...at [email protected], with the subject line of "Early Decision - reconsider later." While you are waiting for us to reconsider your application, we encourage you to review your application and determine if there are ways in which it could be strengthened.

We frequently get questions regarding this process. We hope the following will answer some of them.
You will get the information in the reply from XXXXX.

Like smallwo said, the person I contacted specifically said in their reply that I was released from the ED committment.

I got a call for more information before I was deferred. After deferral, as is probably the case with everyone else, I am open to submit more information if I feel it would add to my candidacy. not sure if you were asking about before or after said deferral, so I decided to cover both.

Sorry, I mean after. I got a call before the final decision, too. I am not sure whether the points they mentioned about are the weakness parts of my application.

I also got a call 2 days for more info before I got the decision email (deferred) ..do not know whether this is a common pattern!!

Do you folks (golpalansai, phillymba2012, smallwo) share anything in common that you think might have led to the deferral? (e.g. neutral interview, currently unemployed, lower than school gmat avg, ...etc)

Can you share at a high level the type of info/questions they asked about during the pre-deferral call?

I have no idea...in the call, they are asking my planned geographical location to work right after the MBA and also my plan B. I am not sure if this is the point made me deferred

the specific questions really depends on which applicant you're talking about. That being said, my questions were related to my career aspirations and whether or not they were achievable - which seems to be a running theme here. Columbia places a very strong emphasis, even more so than other schools, on whether or not they can place you into full-time positions (i.e., "employability" after graduation).

just my 2 cents

Hmm good point. I don't know if employability is the major factor. It could be a subpar GMAT, GPA, recommendation letters, or something. I am not sure. You can strengthen all of those factors by retaking the exam, taking some courses, and getting supplemental letters of recommendation. But I'm not sure about employability. How would one strengthen his "employability"?

I'm specifically talking about what theme of questions the admissions committee speaks to when they call applicants prior to a deferral. Typically, they want clarification regarding something, or they want the applicant to elaborate on something. My guess is that "something" is career goals, employability, and whether or not you have a "plan B" should things not unfold as anticipated during an applicant's bschool experience. They want to make sure that despite anything that might occur, you can find either your dream job or pursue a backup career. I agree with you though, that employability isn't the only major factor regarding an applicant's overall candidacy - GMAT, GPA, undergraduate institution, rec's, essays, interview - they all matter.

Still a ton of white space on the spreadsheet... I've been under review for nearly nine weeks with no movement, no int. invite, nothing. Should I call admissions next week?
