***HELP!*** Anyone with experience with the following scenario, begging for your advice!!

Applied ED, was deferred, and just received the following email:

Hello Cidney,

How are you? We have begun reviewing applications in our “reconsider later” list and yours is among those being discussed. I will be presenting your application to the Admissions Committee, and I would love to have a chance to chat in the next couple of days. This will only take up to 30 minutes of your time—not too long!

Let me know when you are available, and I look forward to speaking with you!

Best,

Assistant Director

What are they going to ask me about? How do I prepare for this? GAHHHH so excited!! One more chance to plead!

for those fellow deferreds, my manager said the adcom is revisiting us once a week for the remainder of the month. My guess is that since some people heard late last week, we can expect something similar in terms of hearing from them towards the end of each week this month.

Very helpful indeed. If you don't mind me asking, how does your manager have so much insight into the process?

Oh i meant my waitlist manager at cbs i.e. the person you emailed to reconsider later. based on the above, it appears theyre making some progress on us.

i'm not sure exactly what it means if they want to chat beforehand, but based on similar requests to discuss with the adcomm, i would guess its more of a positive sign than not.

Thats so exciting! I have no experience with this but I'm assuming that they would ask you to make a case as to why they should pick you over other deferred candidates. What makes you unique and how do you stand out? I am also guessing that they're going to ask you questions similar to the interview...so, why Columbia, why MBA, why now, etc. Know yourself, CBS, and your goals inside out and be prepared to make a compelling argument. Thats my two cents. Best of luck!!

During my second interview, my adcom interviewer went through my resume and stayed largely away from the seven or eight alum interview questions that we've all seen. Also, we spent quite a bit of time on what I considered to be the weakest/most questionable part of my application (for me, it was why I'm pursuing a career change into something that I don't have a lot of experience in). Try to figure out what would be the weakest/most questionable part of your application, and be prepared to discuss this with your interviewer.

Good luck! I would say it's a good sign that an adcom member is taking the time out to interview you for a second time. I would also say that your conversation should be friendly as it seems like this adcom member wants you in, and wants to build the best case possible to convince other adcom members.

It really is a very very broad range. An interview invite can come as quickly as a week after your app is under review, or it can take months to hear about an interview invite or a ding (without an interview invite). The process is such that an adcom member will read your app and can invite you for an interview without anyone else. If he or she passes, it will move on to at least one more adcom member (though this process may take a few weeks), and that adcom member can invite you too. You essentially have two "chances" to be invited.

Do you want to live in Chi-town or the Big Apple? That's the question! I, personally, can't understand anyone who chose Chicago over NYC....

I'm considering cost of living as well, and since I don't plan on staying in either city past the two years during bschool, Chicago is alluring. I fell in love with NYC during my summer analyst training - it really deserves the title of "the city".

UC and Columbia seem pretty comparable in finance, though I get the sense if you want to do something more "quantitative" within finance, UC may be slightly stronger. Conversely, Columbia may be stronger for finance positions that aren't so quantitatively oriented.

I know that Chicago rents will be about $500 or so less per month than NYC rents near Columbia, but living in the south side of Chicago isn't great. I think $10K or so for additional rent over b-school is worth it long-term if you really like NYC.

Thanks for the input!!! I will definitely be considering all this when I study up, interview is set for Wednesday morning! I think one of my downfalls I have found as I've gone through a couple more iterations of my essays for other apps (UCLA and NYU), I think I was a little bit too general about my career goals in the CBS app. It sounded good at the time, but now I see they were too broad. If I have the chance to expound on those areas and show that I have a real plan, hoping that will help me!!

Yes, columbia likes specific goals. They're obsessed with employability and yield.

I thought my first columbia essay was good when i submitted, but i've been re-reading it and torturing myself with what i could've done better. Oh well. It went under review on Jaunary 4th, so I just have to wait.
