maybe they question why you NEED an MBA.

I think no matter how many times it's said people think top-notch academics equals interview invite....but the story matters as well. Truth be told, many admissions folks have said 720-760 checks the same box. Above 760, they start checking to make sure the person is well-rounded - good EQ to quote NYU.

Sorry it didn't work out for you at CBS but i'm sure you'll get in somewhere!

People are getting dings no interview with 790's and 3.65?!?!
Yikes.

And 5 years of WE with a global top 3 leading oilfield service company.. And 5 promotions. CEO rising star award. Top performer of company leadership program, various best awards, 3 technology patents. Yup.

I have good extra curriculars too if it helps :)... VP of College community society, continued community service through company global outreach program etc. etc. . Why I need an MBA is well explained in the Essays and I guess it at least warrants an interview before they decide that I don't?

I think like someone here said it. Maybe we're not the right color or origin?

Wait, isn't that what 'diversity' is all about?

I'm not accusing them of racism and I'm not being a sour loser or anything, but purely based on the trend that someone here showed, it seems like origin/color is a well hidden criteria...

Of course lots of people are going to push back my remark here and say x,y,z... well folks, truth be told, a lot of what ACs say is to sound 'politically correct'. And I don't see why having high academics should work against someone? Harvard is the worst at this, every year they pick someone with a 500 gmat and reject a few with 790 or 800 only to 'show' a wide range of accepted GMATs so they get a huge application pool (read: more money)! what they don't realize is they just dinged someone who worked darn hard for it and picked someone who didn't..

Anyway, your loss CBS

I'm pretty sure that angelfire213 was referring to emotional intelligence by "EQ", not extra-curriculuars. (see: https://mbastudio.net/2009/12/the-myth-of-the-800-gmat/) Meaning that adcoms question whether someone smart enough to score so high on the GMAT is really a people-person and not a geek with no social skills. That doesn't seem to be the case with your background given your awards and demonstrated leadership, etc. Maybe you came across as an arrogant jerk in your essays or other communications with the school. Maybe they think you're really gunning for Stanford or Harvard and didn't convince them that CBS was the school for you. They want a diverse class with diverse strengths, not just a bunch of 750+ Indian internationals. Who knows, but I agree it does seem odd to be denied without interview.

Sorry about the ding and I wish you the best with your other schools, I'm sure you will have great options at the end of this.

Schools are lagging indicators of diversity. They will try to match the current make up of the business world rather than try to push a new agenda. That's why HBS is actively seeking out Japanese admits because they want a good network in the world's 3rd largest economy. China is about to hit #1, so admits from there are not too bad off. India is still lagging behind, and there are still not that many Indian faces at the top of European and American companies. The latter bit is actually changing pretty rapidly with the growth of the tech sector. However, no business school is going to judge an Indian candidate equally to a non-Indian one, because then their school would be majority Asian, and not a good target for recruiting perhaps. UC Berkeley has no racial preference and is 50%+ East and South Asian.

The H1-B thing is also sort of a mess with the way congress is right now.

I am actually applying with the same background on you. Top oilfield company field and product development, international experience, same ethnicity, good extracurriculars energy narrative, but with much less leadership and slightly lower stats. The only difference is that I'm a US citizen.

I'm not rejected yet, but if I do get in, it may really come down to something as silly as H1-B, which is completely unfair.

I applied 1/7 and my status still says application submitted. Has anyone seen a status of "under review" or something similar? I would expect to see this at some point but I feel like my application hasn't been read yet, which may be a good thing.

My status didn't change when I heard back. It still says submitted. I think you'll just see a status change if you are WL or denied admission.

Submitted 1/7 Dinged without interview 2/3

Not sure what they want... 800 GMAT? a 6th promotion in 5 years? Maybe a Rec from Barack Obama on how I put my life at risk and personally assassinated Osama bin laden?

Oh well...

I do not know what to say now...
I thought I had decent chances but you here ... :(

They might actually want what all you have written :D

This points me back to the statement "Conversion of Indian's is 0"
I just see one who has converted on this thread.
Rest are not even invited to the interviews :(

I dont know, but if they want a diverse class, then Indians should be a part of that class. We are truly diverse and belong to the land of 22 languages :) :P
Or may be they have filled their bucket of Indian applicants and are just shooting for different nationalities.

Some thing which we will never know...

devilbart I am sure with those accomplishments and that profile, you cannot suck in the essays.

Their loss :)
All the best for other schools!

As someone pointed out earlier, could high proportion engineering/IIT Indian applicants be an issue. CBS focuses a lot on finance and with so many Indian engineers trying to switch to Finance, could the issue be the most common problem for Indian applicants in a school dominated by Finance Gods.

Just trying to figure out myself.... the one guy who you said got the interview, was he an engineer?
