I think no matter how many times it's said people think top-notch academics equals interview invite....but the story matters as well. Truth be told, many admissions folks have said 720-760 checks the same box. Above 760, they start checking to make sure the person is well-rounded - good EQ to quote NYU.
Sorry it didn't work out for you at CBS but i'm sure you'll get in somewhere!

Columbia really cares about the essays - in particular, the career goals, and why now, and why them. If those are not clear, it's highly unlikely you'll make it very far. They do also care a lot about strong academics (sometimes even more so than high GMAT). We often see people with the strong profile thing and when we look at their essays, it's pretty clear to us why they were turned away.
ETA: We know plenty of Indians, this year and every year, who make it into Columbia. Remember that not everyone is on GMATClub!
