Just received a round 3 invite on campus. Does anybody know if Cornell does alumni/off-campus interviews? Is this frowned upon?
The anecdotal evidence suggest Cornell, in particular, likes you to visit the campus for an interview if you live in North America.
Not only does visiting the campus shows strong interest, but it also allows you to become familiar with Ithaca, which frankly, is not for everyone. JGSM has a higher admission rate (around 35%) than most top 15 schools. I think they are trying to lower that by not making offers to those who see JGSM strictly as a safety school.
I visited the campus for the interview (R2) and I am glad I did. My Booth friend told me I would know if the school is right for me once I visit the campus and talked to its students and faculty. As with most personal decisions, emotions play a big role and you will have more emotional connection with some schools than others. But you will never know until you actually visit the schools. So I would visit the campus for the interview not only to increase your admission chances but also to verify the school is a right fit for you.
Another thing I would do is to proactively email the current students and request for a 15 minute meeting at the Sage Atrium. I would also email professors in a field you are interested in to see if you can meet them as well.
Thanks for such a detailed and informative reply, JinJJa! May I ask who you interviewed with? Would you recommend any specific strategies other than the ones you've mentioned to prepare for the Johnson interviews?
