Just received a round 3 invite on campus. Does anybody know if Cornell does alumni/off-campus interviews? Is this frowned upon?

The anecdotal evidence suggest Cornell, in particular, likes you to visit the campus for an interview if you live in North America.

Not only does visiting the campus shows strong interest, but it also allows you to become familiar with Ithaca, which frankly, is not for everyone. JGSM has a higher admission rate (around 35%) than most top 15 schools. I think they are trying to lower that by not making offers to those who see JGSM strictly as a safety school.

I visited the campus for the interview (R2) and I am glad I did. My Booth friend told me I would know if the school is right for me once I visit the campus and talked to its students and faculty. As with most personal decisions, emotions play a big role and you will have more emotional connection with some schools than others. But you will never know until you actually visit the schools. So I would visit the campus for the interview not only to increase your admission chances but also to verify the school is a right fit for you.

Another thing I would do is to proactively email the current students and request for a 15 minute meeting at the Sage Atrium. I would also email professors in a field you are interested in to see if you can meet them as well.

Thanks for such a detailed and informative reply, JinJJa! May I ask who you interviewed with? Would you recommend any specific strategies other than the ones you've mentioned to prepare for the Johnson interviews?

Alpha, when did you application go under review?

Jinja, I don't think the acceptance rate is 33% I visited campus and they told me it was much lower, more like 19%.... maybe it used to be that high until the MBA boom....

I liked it when I visited, it has a real college feel if that is what you are looking for, not at all like a city school such as NYU or CBS......

The best strategy is preparation. There are only few types of questions that they will ask. The interviews are blind and the interviewer will only have your resume and input from your application reviewer. So be prepared to answer any questions from your resume such as a gap in job history etc.

The best strategy is preparation. There are only few types of questions that they will ask. The interviews are blind and the interviewer will only have your resume and input from your application reviewer. So be prepared to answer any questions from your resume such as a gap in job history etc. Here are the main questions you must nail and what you must NOT say:

1)Why MBA? ("I want to make a lot of money")
2)Why MBA now? ("My parents are making me" or "I am unemployed and have nothing better to do" )
3)Why Cornell? ("Because I can't get into Kellogg/Booth/Wharton")
4)What do you think of Ithaca? ("I hate snow and this place has lots of it, and the airport is smaller than my house").
5)Leadership experiences and approach. ("I believe there are too many Chiefs and not enough Indians so I only follow").
6)Strength ("I was Burger King's employee of the Month")
7)Weakness ("I have no weakness are you kidding me?").
8)Tell me about yourself? ("I have no direction in life and I need help")
9)What can you contribute at Cornell Johnson? ("I am a hypercompetitive geek and I want to kick everyone's ass in class")
10)What classes, professors, and student organizations interest you? ("Accy 101", "Prof...forget his name","Beer Club").

Finally, practice answering your questions out loud. This is the best advice I can give you and ignore it at your own peril.

Great, thanks again. I'll certainly be heeding your advice. Who did you interview with?

Hmm....why do I have a feeling you are a troll going through this website to figure out who I am? I find it somewhat suspicious that you already received an invite as an R3 applicant...

Logically, it SHOULD not matter who I interviewed with.....

Touchy much? I asked a question, which you answered amply and ably, for which I'm grateful. You might want to cool down the attitude, though. Yes, I've received an invite already for R3. No, I couldn't care less who you are.

Attitude? Oh please....If I wanted to give you an attitude, I could have been MUCH nastier. Perhaps you are projecting your own sensitivity on me.

Anyhow, good luck with your interview.

william, it went under review on Jan 18. And thanks for sharing--I have family who are profs at Cornell and friends who are alums. All seem to extoll the home-y feel, which I love, myself.

Not sure if you've applied already or not, but regardless, good luck!

I'm just overly excited. Am I correct in assuming that President's Day won't matter too much in the admissions office?
