meh not always the case, sometimes they’re politely telling you that to push you out nicely. There is no guarentee that you get promoted when you come back. A canadian I know is doing that at an M7 but he told me he’s getting promoted when he comes back. it really depends

Consulting layoffs happen because of lack of engagement at the undergrad level. I.e youve been on the bench for awhile and they need to cut heads based on negative consensus forecasts on the group’s performance in the next year (its always done based on what they foresee in the future). IB layoffs happen a little differently, they dont fire everyone at once they just fire the bottom 25% of the class. You’re compared against your peers constantly so they’ll cut poorer performers. This happens more so at the associate level vs analyst level because at the analyst level youre on a two year contract, and they’ll just not promote you if youre bad (the same thing as a PE associate).

they wont pay for the mba unless they intend to promote you for PE.

its not because its much easier to get canned, the job is way harder, the lifestyle is harder, and its much harder to get promoted. Its IB on steroids.

PE is harder because the work is more thoughtful and you have to actually add value. You manage current portcos while also supporting execution. The role of a PE associate has much more responsibility than an IB associate. IB associates are just Analysts who are paid a bit more.

It’s Sector dependent but I spent probably 20% of my time actually modelling. Recapitalizations or take-privates on asset heavier companies were probably the toughest I’ve done.
