I am confident that if I go to a good school like Johnson and study technicals very well, network well, I and others can get in.

Now, might the bank be Wells Fargo vs Goldman? Or in Charlotte vs NYC? Yes. But I’m okay with that. Certainly not saying folks can get into Moelis easy peasy

Like there’s levels to this lol. You might not get the ultimate EB job but to completely strike out at most schools is largely internationals + those who self select out of the process or didn’t try

Business school is like a family. You can fight with each other and tell each other and complain but you never tell outsiders anything bad about your parents.

Business course is the same way, students complain to each other and nag and so so forth but you never tell outsiders anything negative. I’ve been a student and I’ve talked to many students and you have to understand the student speak so if they are overly enthusiastic that means it’s a Confirmation but if they’re just mildly enthusiastic that means caution.

They will not lie. But there’s a difference between lying and dumping the bare unfiltered message on the table.

If you ask direct questions such as hey how many people have locked in internships at Bank of America for example, they will speak in specific and tell you the truth and if you push on it and say so there’s actually looks like it’s a tough time in the industry right now, they acknowledge it But you never want to make yourself sound like an idiot for going to school where are you now cannot find a job or that everyone else found a job and you’re a loser because you don’t have one.... The more you talk to students the more you hear the little nuances in their answers.

This is probably way too long and I probably missed most of the conversation 🤦‍♂️

But at the same time, if you talk to students about your situation and your profile, they will not lie and say that you have a good chance when you are dead in the water so speak so if you get confirmation from them, that’s a positive.

They won’t lie because you may come next year and be like what the heck man 😂

your biggest challenge is gonna be your background and getting used to the job in that ten week internship. Your issue wont be as much as having the opportunities to interview, and possibly placing, but it will be doing well at the job and adjusting to the standards in such a short time. This is a challenge that many people face who dont come from finance background have. The ones at Cornell, wont say their names, are good friends of mine, most had finance background and found the adjustment very straightforward.

I’m just not a fan of the blanket statements re breaking in. As of now, I’ve largely been told that students strike out if they are international or don’t try.

I think getting the interview, and internship is still going to be tough but it is doable - not impossible - just tough right now. The tougher thing in your case the RO since youre coming from such a different industry.

Yup and I will study hard and work hard. As I am sure others will who are pivoting and serious about it

I am international and ive seen the standards of U.S students. I am a canadian so maybe thats different but honestly the standards of tech questions in the u.s are a joke. Many internationals strike out because of communication issues

I think it is tough/very tough at like the cream of the crop banks. That’s ok. I just want to break in— I’m fine working in Charlotte or Atlanta, esp since I’m from the SE.
