On a very good market career switchers from a top MBA can break in without knowing much or having the right background. They’ll stay on past a year, probably wont get a lot of work or responsibility, but they’ll stay on until they eventually get nudged to leave (they give you 6 months to find a new job before firing you). Now, not so much. Everyone at all levels need to perform. Mds cant be bringing in **** bought deals or private placement offerings with $1M fees to keep the business afloat everyone needs to perform. What does that mean for you? They’re not going to go out of their way to look for unicorns from non-finance/accounting backgrounds. They want to make sure you can do the job, and they wont need to train you as much. Does that mean if you have a non-finance background its over? No, but you need to understand that your odds are stacked against you. Truth is, no one really wants to work with MBA associates. They’re a pain in the ass, we have them spreading comps for the first 8 months of their job that a second year analyst can do in their sleep. Unless they’re super good and have relevant experience to get them up to speed fast, they’re a liability and not an asset. Does that mean you can still get an interview? yes. Does that still mean you can get an offer for a summer position? Yes. Does that mean you can get a return offer? Yes, but your odds are going to be a lot tougher because the standards of work have gone significantly higher, meaning not everyone is going to get a return offer and they will favor guys who are ex accountants or corp dev folks. This is going to upset a lot of people but it shouldn’t once you realize banking is a sales job, and that its market volatile. This is the reason why i want to get out of the industry and do my own thing. The money (300K all in at associate) is not driving my life any better than you think. I want to get out, many of my peers do because the job doesn’t pay for the bs you have to deal with. No, the hours are not an issue - thats a myth, its the politics and the bs. If you think im cosplaying like someone else said, think so, but if its because you think im trying to discourage you because i am competiting against you - i have no reason to lie to you, I am leaving the industry to do something different - I am just giving you the honest truth from my experience.
