Ok I get that....but after speaking to a bunch of admissions directors, I got the sense that they take these rankings very personally. One admissions director told me that if I liked her school I should rank it # 1 or 2, as they rarely extend fellowship offers to students that rank them below that. Reasons being there just aren't that many fellowships to go around, so by the time they go through the students that have ranked them one or two they are finished...but they do have school scholarships for other students they really want...that sentiment was echoed at a different school...so maybe it's just the schools I looked at as I'm looking at the smaller programs?
I don't even think you should apply to more than 3 or 4 schools through the Consortium. I understand the $$ savings, but ranking a school that is the "best fit" a 5 or 6 is insulting to the school. Like - "Yeah, I like your program, but not as much as School Y or School Z."
Honestly, that's silly...Indiana knows its ranked lower than a number of other schools. They won't be "offended" if you put Tuck, Ross, Stern and UVA higher than them, its reality. They would probably be surprised if you did rank them higher. And you're not exactly ranking them last, you have like 16 schools to choose from, 6th isn't bad when compared to all the other schools you could have but didn't apply to. AND, you're not just sticking them in a list, you are dedicating a significant amount of time to writing the school-specific essay.
Besides, any business school knows that choosing a school is ultimately a business decision. They are not wimpy little fairies that will get offended if you choose to apply to them but don't rank them high enough. You need to make the best decisions for yourself and not worry about admissions directors' feelings.
