I have a question about the Dartmouth Tuck scholarship app.
Are you guys treating it as just another B-school essay (artfully crafted, obsessed over sentences etc etc)?

How should one approach it?

I would treat it as just another B-school essay. The scholarship committee members read only this essay (will not read any other essays) so I would try to address everything that sets you apart in this essay.

You are asking someone you don't know to give you money. Instead of the other types of people you met at Tuck. Make yourself the best possible investment.

I'm sending mine tonight. I wonder what percentage of the applicants (or better yet, admits) send in a scholarship application?

I am still working on my scholarship essay.
I can't seem to let it go... 500 words is not much when it comes to 'setting yourself apart' from all the superstars that apply to schools of this caliber. :?

finished interview at Hanover yesterday,it was really conversational and took 30-40 mins . Began with resume walk and continued with why mba why tuck why post mba goal,Team work difficulty, what will study group say about strengths and weakness. It was conducted by a second yr who was really really nice.(As I am in the US I asked if I could come to campus instead of the skype interview, it was worth it)

I saw at least 50 people in suits in the morning who were all interviewing, spoke to quite a few and found they were really high caliber people. Wait for dec 17 continues

Are the people who do not self-initiate the interviews usually from outside the US? I'm just puzzled with why anyone would opt-out of the self-initiation, especially for the EA round, if they live in the country. It almost would look like a conflict of messages to the adcom, in my opinion. What is the consensus in the forums about this?

I think there are always cases in the States that people cannot make it to Hanover for some reason. I've heard that people who are outside of the country has more of a reason; however, take me for an example. I live and work in San Diego. I'm pretty much at the very very very opposite of the states from Hanover. If I didn't self-initiate, would it look bad? I really don't think so. I'm about 20 minutes away from Mexican border and there may be someone in Tijuana Mexico who's applying. If he/she didn't self-initiate, would that be bad? I still don't think so. I think it's judged case by case. Now, for a person who lives in Boston or New York, I think it'll be harder for htem to justify why not self-initiate the interview. But for someone who's literally thousands of miles away from Hanover, I think it'll be okay to not self-initiate.

just for the record, I did self-initiate and wrote a long debrief about it on one of the earlier pages.

1. a trip to Hanover would cost more than a trip to Europe for me
2. health insurance screwed me over on some bills and I owe a huge amount of money. thanks for not covering basic medical care
3. spend $1500 on a hanover trip or buy my daughter special formula that requires $100 week

I hope those are good enough reasons. Not individually but collectively.

To add to all :
The slots are limited, yesterday alone I saw 50 ish people self initiate throughout the day,
If one wants to apply by Oct 13, unless he/she has signed up as soon as things opened there are no slots and hence no self initiated interview.

This was my case and I wrote about it in the app.
