I just have a hard time seeing how 50 deferrals (combined with the biggest pool of EA apps ever!) doesn't impact chances this year- both in 50 spots in the class already being reserved and that Tuck most likely wants to avoid this situation in the future. I would guess we'll see a lower # of admits and a higher # of waitlisters (and acceptances off of the waitlist) to help them manage the yield.

I would agree with this assessment of the situation. My understanding is that admissions expects most of the 50 deferred students to attend next year (90%+).

RF

This is not what the 2 admissions ADs and Director told me. They said it was more like 35 that did accepted the deferral credit, and they only expect 10-15 of those people to enroll next year - which is the same as their normal number of deferrals. Maybe they were deceiving me, but in the time I've spent there, I find that everyone is down to earth and doesn't try to bs you.

the "35" number explanation is closer to what I heard from admissions as well. This question was brought up during a Q&A when I was there for an interview and the adcom lady said something like "50 were 'offered' deferrals, 30 accepted, maybe 15 will actually enroll. and the normal deferal enroll rate is around 10 so its only 5 more people than a normal year."

also agree that its pointless to argue this especially since most of us have already applied but it makes for good (distracting?) discussion since we wont be hearing news until the 17th for the EA folk at least. :)

EA round applicants would hear before the 17th if they are accepted. they would hear on the 17th if they are dinged. a friend of mine (currently a Tuckie) recd a call a week before the decision deadline. Tuck calls all accepted candidates roughly a week before informing the rest.
i wrote an email to the ad-com yesterday and the adcom rep wrote back saying that i will receive the decision on 17th. (i now kind of already know what it is)..
i have also heard from the same source that there is a large backlog from last year and the chances of receiving an admit are proportionately lower this year.

Surprising that "this same source" knows more than two Senior Associate Directors and, don't forget, the Director of Admissions.

that's an inference drawn too far.
i was just quoting a current Tuck student verbatim.

Based on last years thread it looks like admit calls come in at the beginning of the week (Mon/Tues)

From what I have heard from some tuckies, calls are made a couple of days previous to the official date. I would expect calls to go out beginning Monday...

I wouldn't read too much into "you'll hear on 17th" to say what your decision is going to be. They wouldn't make a professional mistake in saying "We'll talk to you on Monday"

Anyhow, if we don't hear by next Thursday, I guess we can safely assume so. how many calls are going out, does anybody know the rough estimate?

I don't know Tuck's yield rate, EA acceptances, etc... my rough guess is 100~120?

100 - 120 at EA ?! It is almost half of the class, no way.

my money (and hopes) is on Mon/Tue. nobody in my house gets to use the phone. i need it to ring when adcom calls.

last year's intake from EA round was ~ 180.
a second year student mentioned during my visit to Hanover that if Tuck adcom could have its way, it wouldn't have another round!

the targeted class size is 240, but they will probably accept ~500 based on the 54% yield, so an estimation of 100-120 is not completely out of the picture - but it's still what it is, an estimation/guess.

at this point numbers don't do much, I would advise you all to find another mechanism for dealing with stress

Agreed. While on campus last year, a student who worked in admissions told me it was astounding how much of the class is EA applicants (his number was 40%).

of all schools, Tuck lays the most emphasis on "fit".
an EA application indicates to adcom that the student has done his/her research and is certain he/she wants to attend Tuck. plus the additional financial commitment helps Tuck improve its "yield".

My guess is about 85-90% interview..acceptance rate of 19% for all applicants. I don't think Tuck has a separate acceptance rate for only those people invited to interview, well at least they don't release one.

I know some current Tuckies and a couple received a call before and a few on the decision day.

I meant not the whole group of interviewed people but those who were invited to the committee-initiated interview.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. Those numbers aren't released. My guess would be comparable to other schools that don't have a self-initiate option. 25-45%. Just a guess.
